This book is dedicated to the memory of the late:

    Julian Berman (18.06.1958 - 13.09.2004) and

    Hilary May Hibberd (4.09.1930 - 28.05.2005)

So often we open our eyes but never really see.

If we truly saw, surely we would feel another’s pain,

    sorrow and loneliness.

Perhaps it’s too much to carry another’s burden as well as ours, but in not trying to help them we only add to our own burden

    the one we label ’guilt’.

    Until we meet again- Sally

You may find the tone of this book rather harsh in comparison to my previous titles. The overall aim is still the same as that of previous works i.e. to inspire and motivate readers to make a better life for themselves. However, while I do believe that a mild and encouraging tone does work, as proven by the success of my earlier titles, I also perceived a need for a book that would grab attention by shocking readers with its brutal honesty and truth. Personally I like people who are down to earth and say it as it is - no dancing around issues - no frills. Without being downright rude, this is my attempt to say it as it is and hope that it makes people sit up and pay attention. The book is based around 11 bold and somewhat harsh statements. I have purposefully kept this introduction short and to the point to keep with the concise and punchy-like theme throughout the book. Now without further ado, let’s get our act together!

    1. Wake up and do something about it!

    Inactivity is the darkroom

    where negatives develop.

    Kathy Helou

Myself and a partner ran motivational seminars for several years. It was enjoyable at first and I often felt an inspirational buzz afterwards, which would linger for some time. During this period we were in demand as guest speakers and presenters to a wide variety of people and organizations.

Then one day I found myself standing in front of a hundred or so people and feeling like a total hypocrite. There I was doing the ’ra, ra’ thing and telling people how to live their lives when it suddenly dawned on me that a lot of what I said they shouldn’t do, I was in fact doing. You see, the thing is, when you get down to the nitty-gritty of it, it’s all much easier said than done - this motivation ’mumbo-jumbo’. Not that it’s nonsense - not at all! I’m all for thinking positively, setting and reaching goals, conquering worry, facing my fears and being happy in the moment. All I’m saying is that it takes effort to get it right and to keep it well and alive once you’ve got the hang of it - this thing they call ’self-motivation.’

So I was standing in front of all these expectant faces and all I wanted to do was throw my hands up in the air and shout Look guys, I can only help you if you’re willing to also help yourselves. You see, I know I can get them all fired up - no problem. I’ve inspired and motivated thousands on countless occasions where they’ve come up to me afterwards full of praise and thanks because they feel motivated to make the necessary changes to their lives. They tell me their problems/issues and what they’re finally going to do about it. Wow, isn’t that fantastic I think as I see people leaving our presentations all ’revved’ up and raring to go. I remember Sarah who was going to get rid of her abusive boyfriend, Mark who was going to change his dead-end job and Sam who was determined to lose weight and start looking after herself properly. The names and good intentions of countless people we’ve presented to flood through my memory.

So what’s the problem - I’ve helped them haven’t I? Well, no, not really. I happened to bump into Sarah six months later at the hospital - she had a black eye and an ugly cut on her forehead. Needless to say she was still with her abusive boyfriend. You guessed it - I also bumped into Mark a few more months down the line and lone and behold, he was still in his dead-end job and still complaining bitterly about it. Of course Sam almost squashed me as I turned a corner in the

street. She was nearly double the size since I’d seen her last and very unhappy about it. She told me this as she gulped down an ice cream. I just nodded sympathetically at all three individuals although what I really wanted to do to all of them was shake some sense into them.

Please don’t get me wrong, I also have files full of letters from people who I’ve helped through seminars and through reading my books. So yes, there have been those who have benefited from my work and this is what keeps me going. However, those who actually make things happen are but a drop in the ocean compared with the masses with good intentions but no follow through.

I guess I just got sick of trying to make people change for the better because unless they’re willing to put in the effort, it’s really a useless exercise. Most of the audience would be looking hopefully at you as though by some miracle your presentation would be able to change their lives profoundly, when in fact you can change nothing. Yes, you may make an immediate impact on them as they feel great afterwards and perhaps for awhile thereafter, but then it wears off. All their good intentions to change for the better are forgotten as they get on with their everyday lives.

I find that people in general tend to be lazy and what they really want is for others to sort out their problems and lives for them. You can’t expect others to do the work for you. I really believe that ’the universe helps those who help themselves’. Now this was my problem with these motivational talks - I could inspire them to change but they still had to do all the work to make positive changes in their lives. However, as I said chances are that within the next few days, hours or even minutes, most of them have forgotten you, your message and anything that they fleetingly thought about changing to better themselves.

In other words, I could talk until I was blue in the face, telling people what is good for them over and over again. However, the truth is that it would mean nothing and change nothing in their lives unless what I said affected them so deeply and profoundly that they decided to make major changes and most importantly to follow them through. Now, I’m a positive person, but the probability of this happening is so pathetically low and laughable. Look, I’m not running down my own ability or that of other motivational speakers, I’m just saying that realistically speaking, no one can change anyone else, but themselves and we all know that change is not easy - it’s actually very hard work! Sadly, we also know that it’s human nature to take the easy way out. It’s so much easier to keep old habits, even if they’re ’bad’. It’s easier to keep thinking negatively because it just seems to come naturally. It’s definitely far easier to whine about things instead of doing things to change the situation. Of course it’s also far more simple to dream about or wish for things without ever having to actually set real goals and go about achieving
