      Chapter One

      The disco ball spun around to the beat of the music blaring from massive speakers. The dim lights and smoky atmosphere allowed a measure of anonymity, which worked for the Cali Club.

      Jess stood behind the bar taking a good look around the place. Yes, the loyal customers were in tonight, but there weren't many new bodies coming in. Something needed to be done to liven the place up, and to make a profit rather than break even each week.

      Stella and her partner Kos walked in. Stella was dressed up as usual. She wore the tightest red glitter dress imaginable that nipped in at the waist, and the low neckline revealed breasts that everyone knew were padded and strapped to form cleavage.

      Jess looked at Stella and wished she had time to look half as good.

      Kos was his usual suited self, black hair slicked back and a cigar he never lit perched in the corner of his mouth. Both men chose this look from time to time.

      The usual, Jess, and whatever you're having. Kos smiled broadly at her.

      I'm good. Thanks, Kos. Got a drink already, Jess said, holding up her drink.

      This was their normal routine. Kos would offer her a drink, which she would decline, because she knew these two didn’t have money to throw away. Jess brushed her blonde hair out of her face as she bent down to open the fridge containing the chilled white wine that Stella liked.

      Usual crowd in here tonight, hey, Jess. Kos spoke up over the music.

      Yeah, a little too quiet. We need more people in. Jess handed over his drinks.

      It'll take time, but this place certainly has potential. Be patient. With that, he winked and walked off to find a table.

      A few other customers came to refresh their drinks and order snacks, which kept her busy. Jess missed Leah walking in until she nearly bumped into her while passing a customer their drinks.

      Hey, slow down, speedy. Leah held onto Jess in an effort to steady her.
