I'm a native Arizonan and while growing up, I would often write down notes about stories germinating in my head. I was always interested in the fantasy genre, having been introduced to Anne McCaffrey's Riders of Pern book series (may she rest in peace) in elementary school. I devoured Piers Anthony, Raymond E. Feist, and later, Lord of the Rings. In trying my hand at mysteries, I've found they are fickle things, like a knot in yarn. Instead of cutting it, try to work it out and once unraveled, have a straight line of yarn again. I will some more books coming soon, so please enjoy the ones I have out now. Prologue
The door hissed open, revealing the scientist. Amber looked up, her breathing suddenly shallow and her heart was pounding in her chest. Would he do it to her again? Was he planning her torture?
He stopped in front of her, a syringe in his hand. It’s time for more. Then you can go play.
She remained silent. He spoke to her like this often, like to a child. Only this child was much more than that.
Obediently, she held out her arm. He bent down, popped the cap off and held her arm still. She carefully watched his other hand with the needle. Close to the skin. Closer still…
In one swift motion, Amber snatched the needle and plunged it into his neck, into the artery or vein she did not know. She wrenched her other arm away from him and threw a punch right into his face, knocking him out.
She hurried to the door and it came open for her. Another scientist was there, and she bumped him out of her way, walking confidently now. The operation was only two people in the lab. Two scientists. One was knocked out. The other was scrambling away. He was the most scared of the two. She paid him no mind.
Amber walked down the hallway and took a right turn, heading to the hallway where the others were kept. Her brothers and sisters now. All came together under this madman’s research. Crazy. The man was clinically insane.
She reached the large double doors. The numbers she knew by heart. She punched them in and the doors swung open, revealing a tank in a large circular room. The creatures swimming inside had the upper half of a human and the lower half of a fish. Mer-people. That’s what the scientist created. To see if he could recreate the legends.
Amber sighed. Too stupid to realize what he was doing. The other nineteen creatures saw her and knew what was going to happen. Amber held up one hand and felt the power of the ocean flow through her. She could control water, any water in the world. She could also communicate silently to the others. They were bound that way.
Save us, milady.
I will, do not worry.
The tank exploded and gallons of water rushed down the hallway, flooding the levels. In her mind, she willed the water to drown the scientist, choking him until he couldn’t breathe. She searched the lab with her mind as to where the other scientist was. He had locked himself in his office and had put a gun to his head.
Now they were free. Amber knew where they must go first. In her mind, she saw the ragged cliffs, heard the noises underwater. Once free of the tank, the other merpeople had dried off and were putting on clothes. Amber had willed the water to go where she wanted, so as to keep part of the place dry. She could not afford to have them flop to the exit.
Once clothed, they followed her down the hallways. Several were speaking to each other in excited anticipation. They will be free. Finally free. They reached the ladder to the second level. The next level up was the roof. They followed her until they reached there. On the rooftop, the twenty merpeople peered over the edge.
The lab had been built near the cliff, but after years of steady erosion, the lab looked like it was about to go over. Amber looked up and her heart soared. The open ocean. The open Pacific. They could go anywhere. As one, they jumped off the roof, breathing in deeply once they fell in, the legs turning to fins, hiding the unsightly inked lab numbers.
We’re free!
We’re free!
Milady, our queen, where should we go now? The last question was asked by one of the younger females. Amber paused.
You may go back to your family if you wish. Keep in mind they might either reject you, or turn you into a media circus. Amber warned her.
I wish to go back.
Very well. Follow the ridgeline next to the shore, but keep out of sight. I will assign someone to take you to a discreet place onshore.
Thank you, milady.
When she was gone, Amber swam around, getting her bearings. She swam down, away from the shore, towards the ocean. She breathed in the oxygen-rich salt water. She was home.
