Chapter 1
Late April 1885
Maddie Kendall couldn't afford to be wrong. And every instinct told the young woman that she was on the right track. A track that after 4 days, 8 hours and 27 minutes was about to land her in the heart of River Oaks, Oregon.
"Next stop, last stop! River Oaks!
As the train thundered towards its final destination, it was as if Maddie had crossed into another world. One that was about to change her life forever.
Though it was far from true, Maddie had always felt somewhat ordinary, next to Olivia or Livvy
the youngest daughter adored by everyone, Claire the talker and Jackson, the headstrong only son of Arthur and Constance Kendall of Corinth, Colorado
The last thing that her father had told her before he had passed away was:
I love you, Maddie. A better daughter a man could never ask for.
Oh, If her papa could see her now. Traveling to an unknown land, to start over with a man she had never met. This was far from ordinary. Times had changed drastically. Nothing was the same anymore. Until five years before, Maddie, her sisters and brother had lived a charmed life. A life of wealth and prestige. The girls were expected to marry men of high standing, have children, attend social galas and give charitably to those less fortunate. Jackson was to follow in his father's footsteps.
It was a charmed life for the Kendall offspring, though their mother had insisted that the three girls learn practical skills such as cooking and sewing and the like.
Maddie's banker father owned several properties and they lived comfortably, he fulfilling most all of his daughters wishes, doting on his son, spoiling them rotten their
grandmother would warn, laughing nonetheless. Until there was far less to laugh about, Arthur’s drinking and gambling woes spreading from hushed whispers to a loud roar. Finally their properties had been seized one by one. Until even their former home, with its magnificent and opulent furnishings was no longer theirs.
Chapter 2
"You have one week to leave the property."
"Just a little more time?" Arthur Kendall had pleaded but the new bank manager was resolute.
His No. One week and not a day more
was final and unequivocal.
Forced to rent a far smaller home, Arthur had tried in vain to recapture his former affluence and social standing. Her father had fought hard to escape the confines of his own childhood poverty. But with its imminent return, Arthur Kendall, her dear papa, was humiliated. His drinking escalated until he succumbed to alcohol poisoning, as the doctor called it. Maddie’s brother, Jackson, had eschewed a life in the financial sector, instead became a lawman, joining the Texas Rangers just prior to the financial upheaval. Before he could be summoned home, he had been ambushed near the Louisiana border by a band of outlaws. Though his remains were never found, he was presumed dead.
Standing over the flower covered casket before it was lowered into the ground, the Kendall women sobbed, Maddie trying her best to reassure her mother.
Oh, Arthur whatever will I do now?
How could you leave?
Don't worry, We’ll be fine, Mama,
Maddie tried to assuage her mother's despair.
But in the wake of her father’s death and the untimely loss of Jackson, Maddie’s mother, Constance, became a shadow of her former self and died of a broken heart months later. Now Livvy and Claire were both married with families of their own. Having married brothers, Mason and Gabe Murphy, they had moved to Montana, following the Murphy boys’ homestead dreams. Maddie insisted on staying in Corinth with their dear, grandmother, who was too ill to travel the long distance to the northernmost state. That was two years before. Now their Nana was gone as well. Maddie was all alone in Corinth.
Chapter 3
She had always loved sewing. But now instead of wearing fancy ball gowns, Maddie created lovely gowns and dresses, for others. Her work was well received by women of means in Corinth, occupying most of her days into evening. At night when the moon was high perched on diaphanous clouds, she gazed out
