1. Introduction
Did you ever try to put yourself in Alice’s shoes as she blundered her way around Wonderland? It was probably pretty frustrating and confusing. How would you like trying to figure out why nothing is what it seems and wondering if you’ll ever find your way back to the world as you know it? Welcome to the reality of Identity Theft.
If you were to believe all of the advertisements, Identity Theft would only be about credit cards — You won’t lose any money, and for a few dollars a month you can totally protect yourself from it.
Unfortunately, just as with Alice, the world isn’t what it seems, and this conclusion would be dead wrong.
The story doesn’t end there. What lies below Wonderland is even more reason to be concerned, and it shows us why Alice’s chaotic journey is an appropriate analogy. When you gaze into the looking glass like Alice, what will you see? Hopefully, it’s an image that closely resembles you. The insidious part about Identity Theft is that it can change what you see in the mirror, and it may affect you in ways that you probably can’t imagine and may find difficult to believe.
The fact is that you are defined by a few numbers, most notably those on your Social Security card and Driver’s License, and while these are the very things that make life so convenient, they also provide thieves the opportunity to use your good name to help them in ways that will hurt you in ways you couldn’t conceive. And, contrary to popular opinion, the threat of Identity Theft isn’t just about credit cards. In fact, its scope is only limited by the imagination of the thieves. That means that anything you can do in your name, someone else can do, too. Despite the old saying that money makes the world go around,
there are people who want things other than money, and your identity may just be what they need to help them get it all.
How Deep is the Rabbit Hole?
To paraphrase Baron von Rothschild, when blood is running in the streets there is massive opportunity. This is true both for the thieves and for the people who are offering solutions. And while there is nothing you can do to totally prevent becoming a victim of Identity Theft, there are a lot of things that you can do, by yourself or with help, to reduce your risk, decrease your likelihood of becoming a victim, and limit the damage that can be done to you or your family.
To accomplish all of that, we will help you to connect the dots walking through what the problem really is, the potential consequences to you, and your options for dealing with it. There are a number of steps, and each is an important part of helping you see beyond the looking glass to find your way out of Wonderland.
So if Identity Theft isn’t just about credit cards, what is it really? If you ask a woman in Utah, the answer to that question might surprise you. Several months after having her purse stolen, she got a strange call from a social worker who said her infant child had tested positive for methamphetamine and the state planned to take the kid away, along with the rest of her children. It was true that the woman had more children, but the youngest was already several years old. The thief had actually used the woman’s identity to receive medical care at a hospital during the birth of a child, which now was registered in the victim’s name. To top it off, after the woman was finally able to prove that the record in her name belonged to a different person altogether, she still was denied access to the record because it wasn’t hers, even though it was in her name and attached to her medical record. In addition to problems with the Department of Social Services, she received bills from the hospital that were not hers, and she continues to worry about her medical records containing inaccurate information.
We will walk you through all the types of Identity Theft, what they are, what they aren’t, and how they may affect you.
Beyond the crime are the people who are trying to help you. Some of their solutions are do it yourself and some are not. The catch is, where a problem demands a quick fix, a quick fix appears. In the words of Scott McNealy, Chairman of Sun Microsystems, "Many of the people in the protection business are making noises that look like they are protecting us, without actually providing any
