Introduction
Hi there, my name is Daniel Hardie and I’m here to teach you ‘How to Save on Travel’, leaving you with more money in your wallet for the trip itself.
The cost of travel seems to continually grow and grow and prices just seem at one extreme to the other. All these ads you now see for packages at ridiculously prices and yet you get let down when you call to book only to find out the price has doubled.
The travel industry in general seems to be too complex, even to the people working within the industry. It is no wonder that you can never seem to find the right price for what you want to do. All this is not without thanks to greedy airlines, hotels and those money hungry travel agents.
How do I know? I used to be a travel agent myself. I had to learn firsthand how airfares, hotels, packages, cruises, trains, buses, group touring and travel insurance all worked and I had to figure out how I could use that to save costs for my clients as well as for myself to earn more commission.
During my time I witnessed many different tricks and secrets, both from other travel agents as well as some very clever clients. They knew how to beat the system and so will you in just a short little while…
In this eBook, I intend to reveal these hidden secrets used by travel agents and the airlines themselves, to help you get the best possible prices for all your travel needs.
I became a travel agent because I loved travel and seeing as you are reading this book then I assume you do too. I had travelled to various countries when I was kid growing up to places and it has definitely had left an imprint on my life still today.
A few years back I spent a year backpacking Europe, which for me was a life changing experience and it was here that I learnt the best lessons in travel. Spending a year overseas, travelling solo was tough at time but was the best thing that ever happened to me.
It was when I returned that I decided I wanted to do something in travel, so I became an agent for one the world’s largest agencies. I stayed and learnt everything I could from them, but after a few years got fed up with the politics of that environment.
This didn’t squash my enthusiasm for travel at all, so instead I decided to start sharing my travel stories and insider knowledge into the form of books and on various websites and social media websites. Search Daniel Hardie for all my travel books.
For this book I wanted to give you a more practical guide that you, as a traveller could use to your advantage over and over again. It is a tip-based book that will help you research and find the cheapest travel possible.
In the following chapters you will discover how airfares work and how to use that to your advantage; covering the different seasons, stop over and connection tips, taxes, open jaws, important rules to check to avoid fees, plus a whole range more.
So now let’s begin, so you can start planning your next trip!
Travel on a Shoestring
Travel on a shoestring has become a popular term in the travel world, thanks to the great ‘
These guides are really good for showing the averages and typical daily costs that you would experience while in your destination. Many of these destinations have free tours and museums which are typically listed within the book as well.
One quick note on the Lonely Planet, some of these books are very bulky and they carry weight with it. So if you are unable to fit the book in your on-board luggage, it will add to your weight of the undercarriage… and going over the limit is very costly.
Always make sure you check the baggage allowance for any airline you intend to fly with… including any intra regional flights overseas. More on airline rules in a later chapter, ‘Important Checks to Avoid Fess.
Why not just check out Lonely Planet’s website for these daily costs and averages plus to start planning what you are going to do at your destination. If you want, print out some of these pages and take them with you, at least it won’t be bulky and weigh too much, eliminating the risk of extra luggage costs.
Why People Travel on a Budget
To answer that question, we would need to look at the various forms of travel.
Some people are travelling to see family or
