About this ebook

Speedread.org is our organization. We've been online for almost 14 years, and teaching reading improvement for 34 years at major colleges and Universities.

Our courses are used worldwide by over 100,000 in several languages in many parts of the globe. We've researched just about every course ever written, printed, or computer-based and we've put them to the test.

On our main website, www.speedread.org we list the ones we've created (now there are over 30 of them) and some of the best courses from other developers that we found and trust.

Research: We did the research, 16 years of it, and we are recognized throughout the world as the leader in speed reading research and as an internet authority on the subject. Here's why we did the research?
“It was early 1980, and I needed to complete my doctorate by late 1981. I had to support a family of four, while working 60 hours a week as an intern therapist. It was quite a task for me. But I did it by learning to accelerate my reading and learning skills.
By 1982, I redeveloped the techniques that worked for me and had them evaluated by school psychologists, principals, and reading teachers. Then, I went out and taught more than 8,000 students in Universities around the Continental U.S. and out to Hawaii.”
Records and analysis class by class demonstrated that students in live classes averaged a 311% improvement. We then shortened the courses for home study.
RESEARCHED FROM: 8,000 live students in classes! They all doubled their reading speed and some did incredibly better!
The students were ecstatic. Below is what some of them had to say.
Let's hear from some of our speed reading students and schools and institutions to see how this course has impacted them:
From a college freshman in Canada:
" I just wanted to let you know that I purchased your program tonight. I read through it once and my reading has gone from 240 words per minute to 398 words per minute. a 66% increase. (That's in 2 minutes after finishing the course.) Amazing! I am a first year college student and my reading assignments have been taking up a lot of my time. I expect that will be improving. Definitely one of my best buys. I will keep you updated on my progress. Thank you!"
Take care,
S.D.H., Canada (2004)

From a school administrator:
"A concise, effective, applicable program which provides students with a positive, nurturing attitude leading to success and educational growth. As a school administrator (former school psychologist and principal), my recommendation is to incorporate (your program) in the school curriculum."
Sheryl L. Calvert - Shullsburg, Wisconsin. (1986)

From a director of programs in a US State prison
To whom it may concern,
"The very fact that there is so much interest and enthusiasm for the class has been a benefit to the institution. In my opinion, Dr. Polmar's course would be an asset to any institution and inmates confined there."
Associate Warden, Director of Programs, Central New Mexico Correction Facility - New Mexico (1983)
Here are some comments from people in the know:
"As an educator I would want your program as part of my library. As a teacher I would want (it) as a part of the resource materials that I would use in the classroom."
B. J. Hanes, High School US History Instructor - Nevada, 1985

"Your proposal to teach students how to learn and how to succeed appears promising."
J. Waihee, Governor of Hawaii, 1986

We have the best techniques that have ever been developed; you can get them online in minutes and be a faster reader immediately. So what does all of this means to you?

11 Minute Speed Reading Course + How To Accomplish More in Less Time - Dr. Jay Polmar

    BEFORE YOU START

I was stuck. I had studied for my doctoral degree but still I needed a miracle to complete it and that thesis. It was a stressful time. Working two jobs, and going to classes nights and weekends, was difficult when you have a wife, and two children. And there was so much to study and learn. About 40,000 pages I needed to know and know it well. I began to look into ways to learn faster and remember more. There were a few methods, not very good ones, mostly philosophy about reading and learning. I had to do something better, more powerful, to help myself. After looking at everything in the library and all the self-help companies selling videos and audios, I realized that this was something that I had do for myself. I had nightmares, then...

I BEGAN TO DREAM ABOUT FIRST LEARNING TO READ

When I first learned to read, as a child, I was taught the sounds of letters, then syllables and finally words. Then I read out loud to the class and my teacher, Mrs. Langbein. As I got older I began to read to myself, and soon I could read the words silently in my head. But that created a habit that’s called subvocalizing. It’s much slower than reading without talking to yourself. Because a person can only speak at about 250 words per minute, or, if from down south -- slower. I was limited in my reading speed. So, first I created a easy method to the stop that inner voice from reading to me.

Then I learned to control how my eyes moved when I read. Then I coordinated my hand and eyes together. Finally I trained my brain to remember and recall (an easy process) and I was a speed reader. This book is the condensed version of my learning method, which I later taught for many years at colleges and Universities in the US. It worked for me, and it works everyday for thousands of people around the world in the six languages it’s published in. It’ll work for you too. Everyone who uses it discovered they could double their reading speed in just an hour with very little effort. You can read faster, too. And here’s how.

A MEMO FROM DR. JAY POLMAR

    Hi,

Thanks for reading SPEED READING IN ONLY ONE HOUR. The unique course that this came from I developed from 1977 to 1981. Then I taught live 3 day classes, to thousands of students and professionals throughout the Southwestern US, Western U.S. and Hawaii for 13 years.

In 1997 the course became available on-line as printed books. It was modernized to one hour of self-taught, methods because people needed help and didn’t have time for the 3 day course. The book has sold thousands of copies in 6 languages and we ship worldwide every week.

At the request of busy executives and students who didn’t have time for our more detailed courses. We’ve honed the course down to only 11 minute of techniques. When you read, use the techniques and you will fly through your reading material.

Here’s an interesting story told to me by a nuclear physicist who took the course in Los Alamos, at the University of New Mexico. He didn’t understand English very well, but reviewed the technique the previous night. He said he was frustrated that his improvement was only 158% after his first practice. Of course, he was reading in a language that wasn’t native to him. He had been born and educated in Israel. For him Hebrew was his native tongue.

Then he picked up a Hebrew newspaper from Tel Aviv, and practiced his new speed reading method. He said that he flew through the paper three to four times faster than normal.

In order to speed read in a second language, just practice in your native language first to develop your skills. There are many audio programs to prepare yourself, and if you want improved skills, practice.

    OPTIONAL READING TEST

TEST YOUR READING RATE TIME YOURSELF

I am summoned to see the headmistress at morning break on Monday, said Miss Brodie. I have no doubt Miss Mackay wishes to question my methods of instruction. It has happened before. It will happen again. Meanwhile, I follow my principles of education and give my best in my prime. The word ‘education’ comes from the root e from ex, out, and duco, I lead. It means a leading out. To me education is a leading out of what is already there in the pupil’s soul. To Miss Mackay it is a putting in of something that is not there, and that is not what I call education, I call it intrusion, from the Latin root prefix in meaning in and the stem trudo, I thrust. Miss Mackay’s method is to thrust a lot of information into a pupil’s head; mine is a leading out of knowledge, and that is true education as is proved by the root meaning. Now Miss Mackay has accused me of putting ideas into my girls’ heads, but in fact that is her practice and mine is quite the opposite. Never let it be said that I put ideas into your heads.

This passage from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, author Muriel Spark entertainingly demonstrates the question educators, philosophers, and psychologists and scientists have struggled with since the Golden Age of Greece:

What does it mean to educate? In other words, how do we learn what we know?

This was once a dangerous road to walk on. In 399 BC, when Socrates was asked why he was called the wisest of all men, he said it was because he knew that he knew nothing. His persistent attitude of asking questions of the the citizens of Athens to learn how they knew what they knew ultimately cost him his life. For ages each generation has asked the same question. Yet it has never been completely answered. But thanks to modern technology, we may be getting closer.

Your brain and mind are capable of PROCESSING from 10,000 to 50,000 units of information every minute. One unit being equal to one word. This information is based upon somewhat old statistics (1980’s). Based on new speed reading technology, as well as strides in brain and mind development, you can probably achieve greater phenomenal reading speeds.

An average high school graduate, when tested, reads about 250 words per minute. The college student reads at about 300 words per minute. But, no matter what your beginning reading speed, don’t worry, it is only the beginning.

We believe that your brain and mind together work like a computer. The brain, is the hardware (CPU = Central PROCESSING Unit or the computer’s brain), and the conscious mind (the thoughts you consciously think) is your software.

Philosophically thinking, perhaps the brain and mind are connected to our physical bodies to make life more convenient for us to learn. Obviously we learn through information (or data) which is communicated in many ways. Reading is only one of them.

Reading speed limitations, first occurred during childhood education. Usually what took place during the first two or three years of schooling in the public school system is this: 1. We first became acquainted with letters, and their sounds. 2. Then, later on we learned syllables and their sounds.
