THE ADVENT SEASON
Advent is the season of hope, joyful expectation and peaceful preparation for Christmas. Many icons and traditions are linked with advent, especially advent wreaths, calendars and other small traditions, which may vary from one culture or region to the next. Advent season always begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Dec 24th.
The Advent Calendar originated from Germany and the first advent calendars were made by hand in the year 1851. These calendars were used to count down days until Christmas Eve by making a chalk mark for every day in December. Different methods emerged, from lighting a candle every night to putting up small religious pictures. The first printed calendar was made by Gerhard Lang in Germany. During his childhood his mother used to put little candies on a piece of card board and every day Gerhard would take one off.
In the 20th century, little doors that could be opened were added and little surprises were found behind them. The surprises varied from a biblical quote to a piece of candy. Later on, many other variations were made like decorated fabric, felt wall hangings and free standing wooden calendars.
