    I grew up on a cane farm outside of Mackay, in the north of Australia, and I now live in Brisbane. After finishing school I worked and travelled around doing a variety of different jobs, including retail and hospitality, and as a Massage Therapist before I studied for a degree in psychology. I have now worked for many years with children, young people and families in child protection, residential care, homelessness, domestic violence and in the foster care system, before starting my own mobile service. I now provide counselliing, family support, workshops, hypnosis and energy healing, as well as my writing.

      Relationships Today

      Young people today are constantly racing into and out of relationships, not giving themselves time to get to know each other. Relationships take time to develop. A long lasting relationship takes even longer to grow and develop.

      Young people seem to want/need that constant contact that the electronic age demands. Constantly texting or racing to update their Facebook page, and Tweeting everything to everyone for validation of their new relationship.

      Previously (Read: in my era and prior) a young man or woman began dating, and continued to date for a couple of months and in some cases even years, before progressing to a committed relationship, i.e. an engagement. Engagements also lasted for months or years before the final step of a full on wedding. The engagement and wedding were a major event in someone’s life, because this was considered and expected to last a life time, and a majority of them did. This is because they took the time to truly get to know each other before making that long term commitment. The only time that short term relationships turned into quickie weddings was during war time. This was because young men feared for their lives and needed to know that someone was at home waiting for them. Emotions were high and especially so, was fear of the unknown.

      Now it seems to be a constant war-time somewhere in the world, with couples racing into a relationship
