About this ebook

"Santa hates Seattle," a television news reporter declares after airing an interview with an inebriated gentleman who stumbled from Polanzky's Pub, slipped on an icy patch of snow and told reporters Santa Claus hit him with his sleigh. Eight-year-old Samantha Kinsey can't believe her ears. Her mother reassures her that Santa could never hate Seattle, but Sam is not convinced. She decides to send Santa an e-mail and make him a gift to show him how much she loves him. When Christmas rolls around the following year, Sam asks for an intangible gift. A wish even Santa will have difficulty granting. This short story is approximately 15,000 words.

What fun to let the words these feelings bring forth play along my tongue and whisper into the still of the night. When I capture them on paper, it is a joy and one of my favorite ways to spend time."

    Chapter One

Better watch out, Rebecca. It seems Santa Claus is having some trouble controlling his sleigh this year, Bob Hudson, Channel Six’s news anchor for the past three years said, suppressing a grin.

How do you know that, Bob? Rebecca St. John replied, wishing Bob would move his chair over a few inches; his heavy-handed cologne made her eyes water.

Seems Mr. Harold Summers was leaving Polanzky’s Pub around midnight Christmas Eve when witnesses say he slipped on a patch of ice. Mr. Summers insists Santa hit him with one of the runners on his sleigh, knocking him down and bruising his shoulder.

Sounds more like a bruised ego if you ask me. How many drinks did Mr. Summers enjoy that night?

The bartender wasn’t keeping a tally.

Couldn’t Rudolph smell the alcohol on his breath?

I think he was too busy trying to guide Santa’s sleigh toward the next rooftop. Rumor has it Mr. Summers intends to sue Santa for reckless endangerment.

You heard it here first. We’ll be lucky if Santa ever returns to Seattle on Christmas now.

Yes, I guess it’s fair to say Santa hates Seattle.

Mom! Samantha yelled as she jumped up from the red and green plaid blanket spread on the living room floor. Mom!

What, honey? Melissa Kinsey said, poking her head out of the large hallway closet.

Santa hates Seattle. He’s not going to come here ever again.

Where did you get that idea?

The news people said it on t.v. Mom, what are we gonna do? Some guy is gonna sue Santa.

Tell me exactly what you heard.

I told you. Some guy got hit on the head by Santa’s sleigh and now he’s going to sue him and Santa won’t ever come to Seattle again!

Melissa crouched down until she was eye-to-eye with her eight-year-old daughter. Santa doesn’t hate Seattle. It all sounds like a misunderstanding.

But what if he never comes back again?

    He’ll come back.

How can you be so sure?

Santa loves Christmas. It’s his favorite time of year. And, he’s a very forgiving man, so I’m sure he realizes there’s been a mistake.

Not when that man sues him. He’ll have to give him all his money and he won’t be able to pay his elves and there’ll be no Christmas!

Melissa tried not to smile at her daughter’s overdramatic depiction of the end of Christmas. She could hardly tell her that Santa wasn’t real so he couldn’t have hit the man on the head, nor did he have a problem paying his elves, since they didn’t exist either.

You don’t need to worry, Sam. Santa will be here next Christmas just like he’s been here every Christmas.

I hope you’re right. I don’t want to waste being good all year long to find out you’re wrong.

That’s not the only reason you’re good all year, is it?

Well… maybe not the only reason. I like to get my allowance, too.

I tell you what, if you’re so concerned that Santa thinks we hate him, why don’t you write him a letter and we can send it to him.

I don’t know what to say.

"Tell him that you look forward to him coming to town all year long and you want him to know that you don’t believe
