About this ebook
Jaclyn dreamed of a visit to King Tut's tomb, and the Valley of the Kings. Egypt became her destination of choice, and we were all excited to arrive and explore it as a family, together. Little did we know that though our Bedouin hosts tried hard to keep us safe, the entire Middle East was a pressure cooker, ready to explode. Join the 6 Anderson's as we explore Egypt and Jordan, December 2010.

Traveling back in time....
We continued our travels, like passengers aboard a reverse-time machine.
We started at home in Canada, in 2010. Like hamsters on a wheel, we rushed from school and work to dance and hockey practices, driving here and driving there for the next game or competition. We hurried to the stores to get groceries, and cooked up a quick meal, anxious not to be late for the next appointment.
And then we stopped.
We chose another direction.
With our four children, ages 16, 14, 12 and 6, my husband of twenty years led us down a path of discovery, away from the normal life
we had created. We went off together to explore the world, and to get to know each other.
We started in Canada, skipped through Los Angeles on our way to Peru, and the ancient Inca civilization of the Andes Mountains. From there, we followed the Spanish Conquistadors to Barcelona, and then the ancient Romans across the seas to Italy.
The Greeks were next, ancient Olympia and Athens, their Acropolis in ruins atop the mountain next to the sea.
The next stop, well, naturally it had to be the land of ancient Egypt, and the Old Silk Road.

Flight: Athens to Cairo Aegean Airways – 55 minutes
We arrived early in the morning in Cairo, Egypt. This was the cheapest flight so far, only $28 CAN for the hour long trip across the Mediterranean from Athens to the northeast corner of Africa, and the ancient world of Egypt. We landed in the capital city of Cairo, population an estimated 22 million.
Our guide from the Bedouin hotel was late meeting us at the airport, which left me wondering if the correspondence was going to come together at all. We did not elect to do an official tour in Egypt, due in part to cost, and in part to the desire to experience something beyond the official tour offerings. We wanted to go off the beaten track, and here was an opportunity to experience something beyond. Relying on masonic connections and our Bedouin friends, we reached out to the local community, and pushed our personal boundaries, in Egypt.
Sham finally spotted us in the airport arrivals lounge, just before Rick had confirmed arrangements that would have taken us in another direction. Sham’s car and drivers had been late, and there was some tension on the ride back across the city, though the differences in Egyptian Arabic
