1 Background/Outline
This handbook was written to address a lack of available information on how to organise a team for participation in an international sporting event.
Specifically, we identified that we wanted to take a rugby union team to play in a rugby 10s tournament somewhere at sometime. We had a list of interested parties, but beyond this, we were scratching our heads as to where and more importantly: How?
It would be easy to put it in the too hard basket but we did not let commonsense get in the way of an alcohol inspired idea and as a result went ahead with it. There are a multitude of people as part of sporting clubs who have developed the experience necessary to organise touring teams, but if they are unavailable, what do you do with a potentially great idea?
This handbook is a guide that has been developed through a level of experience and most importantly a reliance on some brilliant mentors who I accompanied on a tour to figure out how it could be done. All clubs have these kinds of guys, in this case their names are Reg, Goody and Penno and without their help this could not be put together.
Looking through the internet, there are specialty tour providers to support end of season trips and major tournament holidays. There are, however, only a few specialty providers who organise participation in a tour, and these can come at a cost. You will, however, have someone to fall back on if things go awry. This handbook is for those who do not have access to such a tour provider or are game to do it themselves. It will require a level of effort on your behalf, but for an amateur team tour, domestically or internationally, you can achieve
