Jennifer Filmer
Jennifer lives in Australia on a farm with her husband. The farm is nestled between the Murrumbidgee River and the Clear Range Mountains. Every morning groups of kangaroos gather on the front lawn to be feed before the day begins. Bushfires are part of the way of life in Australia. Jennifer developed a practical, skills based firefighting strategy for women when she realized many women were coming to rural communities without the traditional farming background. She received an Order of Australia for this work. After the tragic loss of life in 2009 to bushfires Jennifer and her husband Peter turned the program for rural women into a book available to all Australians. In 2012 this book has been turned into an eBook for worldwide publication. Bushfires know no language and the skills people require to survive bushfires are based on the science of fire and human behavior. Corporations now realize the impact of natural disasters on their workforce and request Jennifer and Peter to speak to and prepare their workforce for bushfires, hoping to reduce the economic loss natural disasters bring to organizations as well as people. Jennifer is committed to inform people that it is their knowledge that will allow them to survive bushfire both physically and mentally. Read her book today and put yourself, your family and your pets on the side of having the best outcome if you are faced with wildfire this summer.

About the Authors
CHAPTER 1: Introduction.
Your life, your family and the knowledge you need
This is a concise, comprehensive book developed to benefit non firefighters. Knowledge allows you to make choices prior to a bushfire event, contribute to the survival of your family and reduced the psychological impact of bushfire. Bushfires do not occur only in rural areas – they also occur in urban and semi urban areas. This book has something for everyone.
In 1993 I developed a program called Fire Fighting for Non Firefighting Women. In 2003 I received an Order of Australia in recognition of this work. The aim of the program was to deliver practical information to rural or semi-rural women who found themselves at home on a farm during summer. At the first sight of smoke their men drove out the gate to man fire brigade vehicles, yelling to their wives as they left Don’t worry, I will be back
. The women were left with the responsibility of protecting the house and out buildings, the children, stock, pets and often visitors. Many had little knowledge of the realities of what would happen when a bushfire approached their property or what they could do.
Recent events have demonstrated that not only rural women need fire fighting information. As the effects of climate change are felt across the world bushfires increase in frequency and are impacting on larger population groups. Everyone needs knowledge on how to protect themselves and their families in a fire emergency. The information contained in this book will help you to help yourself.
Some of the key points apply to a variety of emergency situations but the primary aim is to give you lifesaving information if you find yourself in the path of a bushfire.
Bushfires occur anywhere in the landscape that has the fuel capacity to support them. Leafy urban areas come under bushfire threat given the right climatic conditions and an ignition source.
After reading this book you will be able to consider the factors involved in bushfires, make choices before a fire season, prepare and action a practical fire plan and trust your knowledge and intuition armed with accurate fire information.
We believe people make choices that fit their family situation every day. They do this knowing what is right for them and their families. They are capable of applying these decision making skills to fire situations if they have the knowledge and can plan ahead.
CHAPTER 2: Living with fire.
A home amongst the gum trees
Australia is a blessed country. You can choose to live as close or as far away from nature as you like. Many people decide that a home nestled in the bush is the way they would like to live and others decide a suburban block with a park at the back fence is their preference.
Australia is not only a country with freedom of choice but a long history of fire. If you have vegetation around your home you need to be prepared for a fire event at your house.
Living with fire is as Australian as Sydney Harbour. You might not want to swim in the harbour but if you want to get to the other side you have to deal with the fact it contains water and negotiate your route accordingly. Your choices in bushfires will be just as varied but you have to know what they are and when you have to start your journey.
Stay or leave your house
There is a great deal of discussion around the policy of stay or go
. It implies you will have a choice. You may not.
The decision on whether to evacuate early or remain at home can only be made by you and your family once you have considered the relevant information
