Autumn (also known as Weifarer and Autumn Raven) is a travel and fiction writer currently based in Maine where she lives in a small cottage lost in the woods, which she built with her husband and with the supervision (and approval) of two Cairn terriers. With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University in Studio Arts and English, Autumn once considered a career in illustration. However, an ecology course at Virginia Tech led to a Master of Science degree in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from the University of Maine in Orono. After graduation with her M.S., Autumn has worked for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. This was a great job that not only let her help the environment and protect local agriculture, but also gave her a paycheck big enough to support her writing habit until finally ... at long last she is now a full time writer and on-line educator!

Map from the Crossing south to the Great Desert of Ak’AshantiIntroduction to the Companion and the world of Myrrah
The story that became Born of Water grew slowly. It was inspired from a painting located in, of all places, the bathroom of an office I joined in 2008. Maybe it was a thought spawned as a refuge from work stress and deadlines. Day after day, I looked at the calm, Mediterranean style coastal village and wondered what that world was like. The daydream caught onto a short story, which was also living in my head. Suddenly, a whole new adventure began to spin to life.
It took time, over two years and two novel writing classes, to finally turn the idea into a novel. But it still didn't feel finished. It didn't feel like my best work. I'd relied on a few outside ideas to fill in some of the people in the world I'd created. The Kith relied heavily on Welsh influences and language, including An English to Gaelic Primer of Plant Names. Many of the cities also felt similar, as if cut from the same paper model. There was little unique in the places or people. I felt like I hadn't really pushed myself or the novel to the best it could be.
I put the story aside for a while, but finally one day I sat down and pulled it apart. I separated each chapter and wrote notes on the corners about whose perspective it should be in, what the best points were, and what elements needed to be enhanced or polished. I realized that I needed to know a lot more about the world I'd created.
Thus began a period of creative brainstorming. I wrote stories set amid the days before Born of Water began for each of the characters. I wanted to really understand what their lives were like - what aspirations they had and problems they struggled with - so that I could more fully understand how they reacted as Born of Water progressed.
As I discovered the life stories of the characters, I began to develop the history of the cities and the cultures that inhabited them. Finally, after taking an intro Spanish class, I pushed myself to create the twin languages of the Kith and the Ashanti known as Kay Selfah. With the creation of this language and the development of the unique cultures, the last connections to common fantasy themes were severed. The world and its inhabitants became fully mine - or maybe I should say theirs.
Once all the pieces had been more deeply developed, it was time to pull everything back together again. I began to rewrite Born of Water, using the first version as a guidepost for action and events. Much of the background information that I had spent months creating did not make an obvious presence in the final novel. Its role was to make the world more concrete and unique as the story unfolded; the information needed to exist without dominating the story line.
But I loved the stories and history of the people of the world that became known as Myrrah. And so at the suggestion of my husband, I compiled that extra information here. If you've read Born of Water and wondered what terrible secret the Ashanti carried along with their great gifts, you can find it here along with many other hidden secrets belonging to this world. You will find most of The Companion written in the voices of those who inhabit Myrrah. Is there a better way to experience a place except through the words and voice of someone familiar with it?
If you haven't read the story, I hope you find these pages inspiring. To see the novel, you can find it by clicking here: Born of Water.
Enjoy the journey,

From the Beginning
to the Church of Four Orders
Our history says that the Goddess Mhyrah came down from her home amid the stars and created this world. That is why we named it Myrrah after her, for she is our mother and we are her children. When Mhyrah finished creating all that was on and in the world, she had some of the essences that had been used to shape it left over. She formed these into four small spheres, each holding the pure power of the element of which they were made. Because they were powerful and separate from the whole, Mhyrah placed the spheres at the corners of the world, lest one overwhelm another.
The sphere of water rested in the basin of a waterfall along the River of Turcot, far to the north. Its dense watery surface shone pure lavender to azure-blue, sometimes forming a crust of ice which would disappear the next moment. To touch it was said to cure stiffness and infirmities of age. To drink from it could give the gift of speech to those who had none.
The sphere of fire sat in the caldera of an isolated volcanic island, which lay towards the rising sun in the Ocean of Ilaiya. It glowed like a star
