Acknowledgements
The ideas in this book have grown from my experience of life combined with a number of opportunities I’ve had to learn from others. Every day my coaching clients teach me something new. I’ve also been fortunate to participate in several excellent personal growth workshops.
Dedication
I dedicate this book to people who seek inner growth. You know you can have it. You are living from the heart and teaching others to do the same. Your courageous quest improves the world for everyone.
Foreword
Kody knew there was something amiss. You could see in his eyes that he was confused, frustrated and, I suspect, in retrospect, embarrassed. If he could speak, he’d be saying what-did-I-do-wrong-this-time.
Let’s go, Kody,
I repeated. He tried to budge but stayed stuck. He looked down, shifted his eyes away from mine, revealing the telltale whites of his eyes that say, Help me. Please. I don’t know what to do.
Kody was standing on his own leash. He wanted to move towards me. However, he couldn’t budge. His own actions were holding him back.
I went to him, ruffled his ears and freed his leash from below his oversized paw. Kody looked up, raised an eyebrow, gave his golden retriever smile and a little snort, thanking me for freeing him. In an instance he forgot his struggle. He expressed no laments, no remorse, no apologies. Kody was living completely in the present. It seemed that once the incident was over it was out of his mind.
Coaching session with Ben
A parallel event occurred later in the day. A client who I’ll call Ben was explaining over the telephone his clear vision for his life. His voice rang with excitement. I know what I want,
he blurted energetically. But it’s going to be so difficult,
he lamented, …not so certain I can do it.
With these words, his voice tailed off and his energy vanished.
It seemed like another person spoke the last sentence. Ben’s internal voice had taken over. Like Kody’s paw on his leash, Ben’s negative voice was holding him back.
In Kody’s case, it was easy to take his foot off his leash. With Ben, we talked for several minutes. We worked together to release him from his negative inner voices or what some people call the inner judge
, inner critic
, Gremlin
,negative inner voice
or other names.
Ben spoke quietly about his wonderful vision of being peaceful.
He explained that when he is there, I have all I need. No more anger, frustration and doubt. Just peace, confidence and connection to everyone around me.
However, he lamented, I’m afraid of getting it wrong. I can almost taste the fear. My fear of messing up will lead me to work harder, too hard. When something does go wrong, I will get even more afraid of making mistakes. This is going to be such a struggle.
During our discussion, Ben saw that he creates struggle
when he believes that life is a struggle.
As we talked, Ben realized that he tends to view his life as a struggle and the truth is that when he views life from a perspective of struggle he creates a negative space. As he said, I find fault with people and things. I don’t trust people. I don’t listen well to others because I think they want to disagree with me. I don’t trust myself, or others. It’s a terrible place to be. Takes away the fun of life.
During the course of our call, Ben realized that the way to eliminate struggle from his life is simply to stop viewing the world from that perspective. As he said, Being positive, smiling, confident and content will make a real difference in my life.
Ben started with the idea that struggle could be eliminated. He decided to replace struggle with peace and love. He learned to focus on the feelings of peace and love. He learned to enjoy the feeling of peace and love. In this way
