Prologue

The Great Pyramid is a mass estimated at 5.9 million metric tons which in the main was moved over a distance of 600 miles to the construction site. The height to which the final material would have to be hoisted is 146.5 metres (480.6 ft), higher than an average forty seven story building. Based on these estimates, building this in twenty years would involve installing approximately 800 metric tons of stone every day. Assuming 590,712 blocks, an average of eighty one blocks per day would need to be placed (however, according to other estimates it may have taken 30 years). Using ten work crews per side of the pyramid, each work crew would need to place two blocks per day.

If a more manageable figure of 202 metric tons (about two thirds capacity of a modern mega-truck) were to be envisaged for the daily emplacement of stone then 80 years would elapse before such a building could be finished. Figures of this magnitude suggest that with the direct use of manual labor alone it might not be possible for such a structure to be raised inside one human life-time particularly if the financial means to sustain the project were also taken into account.

The thirteen-acre limestone bedrock base was prepared to a degree of accuracy only recently achieved with laser technology and done in such a way that no corner of its base is more than one-half inch higher or lower than the others. The NE and SW corners are actually bedded on existing hillocks. Additionally the structure is seamlessly accommodated to at least one other pre-existing central hillock and to allow earth-quake resistant ball and sockets assemblies at each corner to be set at different heights. The vertical distance between the highest and lowest assembly is seventeen inches. The reference known as the mean socket level, or base level, is generally used to relate height and perimeter measurements.

Consider that there is currently no way to verify that the Egyptian civilization to whom the pyramids are attributed actually developed in situ. No evidence exists to support the idea that a comparatively primitive people gradually evolved a civilization capable of building The Great Pyramid. Indeed it is not beyond the bounds of possibility to suppose that many if not most of the pyramids were signed by means of cartouches placed there by the Pharaohs of later times anxious to lay claim to monuments that were not of their own making.

But what if the Pyramid was not built by the ancient Egyptians at all?

Keep in mind that the builders of the Great Pyramid of Giza almost certainly knew the precise circumference of the Earth and the length of the year to several decimal places of accuracy. This includes the Sidereal year (365.2564 days between two sightings of the same star before and after the earth’s orbit), the Anomalistic year (365.2599 days of the earth’s sun orbit), and the Solar year (365.24 days between two successive autumnal equinoxes). The minute discrepancies of the lengths of the base of the pyramid (several inches over the 230 meter length of its base) reveal not an error on the part of the builders but an ingenious means of incorporating into the pyramid the discrepancies of the earth itself, in this case the flattening of the earth's globe at the poles. The pyramid inch PI equals 1.0010846752 British inches is the basic measurement unit used.

The Great Pyramid of Giza has also been shown to be an almanac capable of measuring the length of the year to an accuracy of 365.2422 days - rivaling the accuracy of a modern telescope. The ancient architect(s) may also have known the mean length of the Earth’s orbit around the sun, the average distance of the Earth from the Sun, the specific density of the planet (and thus the weight of the planet), the precession of the equinoxes (which defines the current era as the Age of Pisces), the acceleration of gravity, and the speed of light. In fact, as a simple, precise, and virtually indestructible surveying instrument, the compass point of the pyramid is so finely tuned to north that modern compasses use it for a reference. The Pyramid’s location also serves as a geodetic marker for the geography of the ancient world - being located at the geocentric center of the earth’s land mass. The top of the Grand Gallery is set at Latitude 29 deg 58’ 45.28" north. The decimal equivalent is 29.9792458 degrees north. The speed of light in a vacuum is 299792458 m/sec, is this co-incidence? Perhaps not, when the numerous other mathematical constants built into the structure overall are considered.

Remember also that recent evidence clearly indicates that granite blocks in the pyramid complex show an abundance of machine-tool marks as made by large diameter circular saws, mechanized drills and the like and that furthermore some at least of the limestone blocks used in the pyramid might have been precision- molded from geopolymers.

I wish to acknowledge my debt to my friend and colleague Prof Arysio Nunes dos Santos whom I met on the Ancient Wisdom list back in 1996. Arysio was then ever the complete scientist while I had just shaken myself loose of my previously undying commitment thereto. I was in Paris at the time but had just arrived there after living some fourteen years in Indonesia during which time, as a marine scientist, I had come to know the Sunda Strait and the Pulau Seribu island chain very well indeed. At first I could not reconcile Arysio’s adherence to the notion of a giant blast in the region of Krakatau because the remains of the 1883 explosion had left only a very modest remnant of shattered land. True there were abundant records of the severity of the associated modest tidal wave but, on the adjacent shorelines of the Sunda Strait, nothing to speak of. I returned to Indonesia during our discussions of these matters, visited Ujung Kulon and particularly the North West coast of Java. I remained unconvinced of Arysio’s claim, even though the huge wave-cut platforms of North West Java certainly convinced me that giant tsunamis had regularly battered that region at the least but, a mile-high tsunami? Give me a break for goodness sake! Never the less we agreed to set-up a joint web-site based with Compuserve and then Geocities wherein we would published the results and the outputs of our somewhat lengthy and frequent discussions on the Reality of Atlantis.

It was not until the advent of Google Maps that I thought to turn this fine analytical tool onto the Sunda Strait, at first nothing and then in a flash, I saw it. I rushed immediately to tell Arysio only to find that he had already moved on to a higher realm of consideration. Accordingly, I am republishing the results of our deliberations herein and including the reasons for my own interest in the subject.

During the entire period of our discussions (over some three years in duration) I did not directly indicate to Arysio that I had, only a few months before we commenced speaking, managed to immerse myself quite by chance in a deeply involved past-life recollection as an Atlantean High Official out-posted to the Great Pyramid itself. Truth be told, it has, to this point, taken me sixteen years to summon up the energy and stamina to be able to report on that life, or rather more to the point, report on the end of that life and I owe Arysio the world for his cold calculating and objective determination to reveal the reality of Atlantis. Without his insistence I might never have otherwise said anything about my recollections. Thus, desiring earnestly to revoke all evidence that pointed to the existence of Atlantis I fought him tooth and nail before accepting it fully, that is, until the advent of Google Earth. I am herewith pleased to acknowledge that the sections of this work entitled: Atlantis, Ages of Humankind, Time-frame for civilizations, Artifacts out of time and place, Mythology and existence, Reality of Atlantis and Demise of Atlantis were originally worked up between the two of us and published in one form or another in March of 1997 on our tripartite (along with Susan Cafoncelli ) website entitled "Atlantis, Gaia, New Age in the days of Geocities. This book has been trying to emerge for 16 years, ever since I quite unexpectedly found myself in the passages of the Great Pyramid back in 1966 so I may have picked up material during that interval that deserves recognition in its own right. Generally, if I do not mention a specific outside source it is because I am using my own recollections. Where I dismiss a large body of material, such as the carbon dating associated with the Great Pyramid, without citing any reference, it is from first principals.

Atlantis

The first clearly recorded account of Atlantis appears in two of Plato’s dialogues written around 360 BC. The first titled Timaeus and the second Critias, (an account of a war between Athens, the supposed homeland, and Atlantis). In the second book, the character Critias tells the story of a journey to Egypt undertaken by Solon where he hears the story of Atlantis, and the war involving Athens. According to Plato, Atlantis was an island power lying in front of the Pillars of Hercules, perhaps somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean or, even far beyond that and therefore in the Pacific. Atlantis was said to have conquered many parts of Africa and Western Europe around 9600 BC. Following a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean in a single day and night of misfortune.

Beyond the chronology offered up by Plato there is no securely objective way to date the period in which Atlantis might have existed. Various dates have been offered up in discussions, ranging from 2,500 BC, 10,500 BC, 12,000 BC or even as far into the past as 50,000 years BC. The first mentioned might be associated with the date Egyptologists generally estimate to be the period in which the Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed. The Great Pyramid at Giza is the largest of the pyramids of ancient Egypt. Khufu (Cheops to the Greeks), who ruled about 2589-2566 BC when the Old Kingdom of Egypt was nearing a peak of prosperity and culture, is generally considered to be the builder of the great pyramid. The pyramid is astonishing for both its size and mathematical precision. The second citation of 10,500 BC approximates the date offered up by Plato for the destruction of Atlantis and in which case that city state existed in the equatorial region of an ice-age world where the sea-level was lower than it is today by around 130-150 meters or so. This (the last) ice-age started around 50,000 years ago, peaked approximately 22,000 years ago and then terminated abruptly around 12,500 BP (Before Present). The third date of 12,000 BC refers to the approximate time that Atlantis as a City-State was founded. The fourth date relates to a period around 50,000 years BP. This is also roughly 50,000 years after commencement of the last ice age (108,000 BP) and at least 150,000 years after Homo sapiens arose in Africa. Technologically distinct artifacts used by early humans appear as far back in the fossil record as around 2.5 to 2.6 million years ago.

Through the last eight hundred million years (and even beyond that) ice ages have occurred regularly every one hundred thousand years or so persisting for around ninety thousand years separated by interglacial breaks of approximately ten thousand years. Thus in the last two hundred thousand years there have been two long-term ice-ages. Individual extensions of lower temperatures within such ice-ages are often termed glaciations and the warm periods are known as inter-glacials. In common speech, the last ice-age refers to the period of glaciation that peaked from twenty to twenty-two thousand years ago resulting in the current interglacial which commenced around twelve thousand five hundred years ago.
