About this ebook

An E-book re-issue of a collection originally published in June, 1997 by E. Mellon Press. In 1998, it earned the Peace Corp's annual award for best poetry book by a former volunteer. Forrest Gander described the poems as "not absurdly modern, but they take the risk of articulating a serious moral gaze.

"John Flynn's poems show originality and his own imagery. They are good and deserve to be read."
Leo Connellan, former poet laureate of Connecticut

"I have sampled these poems with pleasure."
Richard Wilbur, former poet laureate of U.S.A.

"What a pleasure it is, in an era of one unclad emperor after another of the "postmodern" academy's evasions and obliquities, to come on a young writer who addresses things that actually matter in a book of poems! John Michael Flynn speaks of real and recognizable characters in real and recognizable locales; their dreams and their anxieties are -- to use a word now sniffed at by the tenure hounds -- universal in their relevance. I recommend his work to all readers, not just so-called specialists in poetry.
Sydney Lea

"These poems are not 'absurdly modern' but take the risk of articulating a serious moral gaze."
Forrest Gander

Anyone wondering where the Whitmanesque impulse has gone need look no further.”—Baron Wormser, former poet laureate, state of MaineFlynn’s prose at every turn is crisp and evocative; he has a gift for description of cities, landscapes and characters – the latter seem so real one could almost touch them. I have for years enjoyed his short stories, poems and translations, and I’m delighted he has brought his considerable powers to a wonderfully vivid collection that crackles with energy and insight.-- Geoffrey Clark, author of Wedding In OctoberThere’s something dazzling about how Flynn evokes beauty and isolation, tragedy and triumph, in language that sings and begs us to sing along, too.-- Alyson Hagy, author of BoletoThe work is concrete, seductive, and dramatic in its intensity – drawing the reader in.-- Jack Smith, author of IconFlynn is an author who pays attention to the details. Vivid and engaging, it’s a pleasure to add Off To The Next Wherever to my shelf.-- Kristen-Paige Madonia, author of Fingerprints of You

Moments Between Cities - John Michael Flynn

    RIPE

    Ground fog whitens the window

into a threat of early winter.

    One hawk submerges,

    its cree a spear

    swapping majesty for vigilance.

    Silver the slow haunt

    of its rising echo

    stray barren sun

    ghosting the corn.

    TWILIGHT ON THE NIAGARA RIVER

    Given to effortless waters

    our long wet kisses

freeing flocks of gulls in silhouette.

Magenta eddies in that broad river

    stitching day and night together

as our hands caressed the skies

of all the places we’d been.

A loner downriver savored his last Sunday

    cigar, fishing dusk water

    for smallmouth and perch,

envy behind the rumple of his tilted cap

as he watched us peel ourselves

    down to children again.

When we took time to stop kissing

our eyes looked back at him with guilt

low clouds above the current suggesting lavender

as he blushed and smoked and worked his reel.
