SUCEDIÓ UNA MAÑANA de septiembre. Me encontraba buscando una palabra en la enciclopedia cuando de pronto, entre las páginas, algo cayó a mi escritorio.
Al principio pensé que se trataba de un billete de cinco dólares que suelo guardar entre las hojas de mis libros y se me había quedado olvidado. Para mi sorpresa no era ningún billete. ¿Saben qué era? Pues nada más y nada menos que un pollito. Sí, así como lo oyen: ¡Un pollito!
Frente a mí estaba mirándome el pequeño animal con sus ojos diminutos y negros. No supe qué hacer en ese momento. Era la primera vez que me sucedía algo extraño, que un pollito se me apareciera por arte de magia sobre mi escritorio. Por suerte, mi gata Inés no andaba por allí, si no, se lo habría tragado de un solo bocado.
—Buenos días, señor —me dijo de repente.
Quedé pasmado. Jamás me imaginé que un animal pudiera hablar. Pensé que estaba soñando. Esperaba que me dijera: Pío, pío, pío, como todos los pollitos. No me quedó más remedio que preguntarle.
—¿Dónde aprendiste a hablar?
—¡En la escuela! —respondió entusiasmado.
—¿Y acaso los pollitos van a la escuela? —pregunté desconcertado.
—¿Acaso los animales no tenemos derecho a ir a la escuela y aprender como todo el mundo?
Me rasqué la cabeza llena de miles de preguntas.
—¿Y cómo te llamas?
—Juan.
—Ahora, Juan, explícame, ¿cómo fue que llegaste aquí?
Juan, el pollito, era amarillo, apenas le estaban saliendo las plumas. Tenía una gorra azul con las iniciales YN bordadas con letras blancas.
—Bueno, te voy a contar. Me encontraba en la biblioteca buscando una palabra en la enciclopedia cuando de repente una fuerza misteriosa me haló y me encontré en tu escritorio.
—Ya veo —respondí estupefacto.
Hizo un breve silencio. Empezó a caminar pensativo de un lado para otro. Cargaba en la espalda una pequeña mochila azul. Vestía un suéter rojo, pantalón caqui y zapatillas Nike blancas. De pronto, hurgó el bolsillo de uno de sus pantalones, sacó una libreta y se quedó leyendo algo.
—¿Sabes qué quiere decir ignorante? —me preguntó al fin.
Miré los centenares de libros que se apilaban por toda la sala de mi casa.
—Según el diccionario Larousse, ignorante quiere decir no saber nada o ser analfabeto.
—¡Ohhh! —exclamó.
Seguidamente me formuló la siguiente interrogante:
—¿Y qué significa analfabeto?
—Bueno, aquel que no ha ido nunca a una escuela y no sabe leer ni escribir.
Se quedó pensativo un rato. Me miró fijamente a los ojos.
—Entonces, no soy ningún ignorante ni analfabeto —dijo de
