About this ebook
But, in the recent years it has been noticed that a very large majority of the students, without reading the original texts, rely on the guide books or notes prepared by their teachers or others. This is definitely not a healthy habit because students do pass their exams with the help of such notes; they miss so many things which haunt them in their later lives.
I would strongly advise all the students to read the original text once again even if you have already read it, after reading this short treatise. You will see that the same story, after reading this treatise, will begin to give many new meanings to you.
All the best.

Chapter 1: Introduction
The Great Gatsby is considered to be the finest work by the famous American writer Fitzgerald. F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fitzgerald is popular all over the world for his world famous books The Great Gatsby
, and Jazz Age
, however, Babylon Revisited
is one of those books which pulled the attention of the academic circles and educational institutions from all over the world.
The name Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was a sincere tribute to his relatives known as Francis Scott Key, the author of The Star Spangled Banner.
Most of Fitzgerald’s childhood was spent in Buffalo, New York, and Minnesota. His parents were of Roman Catholics of Irish descent. They were not rich folks but they were able to send Fitzgerald to a prep school in New Jersey. One of his aunts provided the financial assistance for his schooling. Having completed his school, Fitzgerald joined Princeton University and he studied there for three years. Unfortunately, he could not continue his studies there and he dropped out. He joined the army in 1917, the year when the United States of America got involved in the World War I.
While he was under training to become an officer in the army, Fitzgerald wrote his first novel. Having finished the script, he submitted it to an editor at Scribner’s. Unfortunately, his script was rejected.
During his training period, he came across a high society girl from Alabama. She was called Zelda Sayre. Eventually, Fitzgerald would marry that girl in the year 1920.
He was going to be deployed to Europe, but, to his good fortune, the First World War ended right at that time.
After the army, Fitzgerald came back home and began to live in his parents’ house in St. Paul. He started revising the first novel which he had written during his training for being an army officer and which had been rejected by the editor. Earlier the novel was titled The Romantic Egoist
but Fitzgerald changed the title to This Side of Paradise.
His hard work finally paid off and This Side of Paradise
was published in 1920. It was a great success and people liked the story and the style of writing. There was praise for Fitzgerald from all over the world. Even the reviewers and critics acclaimed his skill as a story teller. He became famous overnight.
The publisher wanted to cash on his popularity and they rushed to Fitzgerald. They offered to publish his first collection of short stories titled Flappers and Philosophers.
It was published in the year 1920. The book was an immediate success and his popularity as a writer continued to ascend.
In the year 1922, he got his second collection of short stories published. It was called
