Introduction
In the first book, I talked about the physical body and preparing for meditation. Now we are taking the next step and increasing awareness. The first book included a series of exercises to get your body moving and to become aware of your body movements. This book is about bringing a stronger awareness to your physical body.
How often have you asked or been asked How are you?
and answered fine!
I realize that not everyone wants to know if I have a headache or to summarize my last operation but are we aware of how we are feeling. How often do we go to the doctor and are able to tell him where we hurt or what is going on in our lives? If we think about it, he can’t help us if we aren’t aware of our problems or feelings. Imagine how much quicker he can help us if we can easily tell him what’s wrong. There is a greater power within us in knowing how we feel physically.
My students are my best teachers. I have certain questions I always pose to them each session and I am not disappointed. I get them to acknowledge that awareness isn’t easy and they start to think more about themselves and how they are feeling. My philosophy is you can’t change anything you aren’t aware of.
The questions are:
Tell me something about yourself without using marital status or career?
What was the last thing you did just for yourself that made you really happy and didn’t concern anybody else?
If you could make up a statement about yourself starting with I am
e.g. beautiful, smart, happy, etc. what would it be?
An affirmation is something which you say to yourself to initiate change in your life or to change your frame of mind. What would your affirmation be?
The hardest is: At the end of your life if you could write your own epitaph, what would it be? This is not what you want other people to think of you but how you want to remember your life.
It amazes me how difficult each of those questions are for students especially when I mention not using titles or that it doesn’t concern anyone else. Everyone can relate what they want for others and how they want to be perceived but find it difficult to say how they want to feel.
I am always sad to see how mindless
our society is becoming. We are taught to rely on others for assurances but not self-worth. We are told to work at 110% but what is left for us? We are connected every minute of every day by electronic gadgets but so disconnected with the people and sights which surround us. We listen and watch what is happening on our stock markets, fashion capitals but fail to listen and see what is outside our windows. We worship big cars, big homes, rich and fancy celebrities but reject what we own or see in the mirror. We are constantly changing and altering everything around us but fear change in what we are comfortable with in our lives. It amazes me how lost we have become.
I sat on a commuter train one time and watched an executive man in a rich suit reading the stock prices. Across from him sat his teenage son. I watched this lovely young man trying to talk to his father through the newspaper held between them. After a few attempts, the son sat back disappointment clearly on his face. What a shame? Here was a beautiful opportunity this man had to connect with his son but he read his daily newspaper instead. How many times I heard this beautiful young man excitedly saying Dad
and then trying to engage his father in conversation but his father
