When the HCG Diet first experienced its resurgence in popularity in 2007, there were very few people who even knew what it was. The diet had been around since the 1950’s and enjoyed some success in the 1970‘s. Today, it is rare to find a person who has not had a friend, family member or acquaintance who has done the HCG Diet with great success.
It was a Saturday morning infomercial by controversial health author Kevin Trudeau touting his latest book, "The Weight Loss Cure They Don’t Want You to Know About," a book about the HCG Diet. I didn’t know why at the time but something told me to pay attention and that this just might be the answer to my weight loss issues. Mr. Trudeau’s book led me to the story of Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, the founder of the HCG Weight Loss Protocol and his book Pounds and Inches, a New Approach to Obesity. Dr. Simeons didn’t refer to this program as a diet because in essence, the protocol is a medical treatment that Dr. Simeons theorized would reset the hypothalamus and raise the metabolism. A program that would actually correct an endocrine disorder that is the root cause of obesity for many individuals.
Dr. Simeons successfully treated thousands of patients with his HCG weight loss protocol, including many celebrities and diplomats at a hospital in Rome, Italy. It was at this time that he wrote Pounds and Inches, a New Approach to Obesity where he outlines, for the first time, his amazing program; the program you will now be introduced to. This program utilizes a low dose of HCG or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin combined with a low calorie diet of very specific foods that many dieters swear offers weight loss results of up to a pound a day.
When I was growing up, I struggled with my weight. Even when I was fairly thin I always felt fat. My struggles with my weight affected my self-esteem and began decades of struggle, cravings, of gaining and losing and experiencing the classic yo-yo diet syndrome many of us are so familiar with.
Although I struggled with my weight on and off all through high school and college, it wasn’t until the death of my mother from complications of diabetes that I experienced a steady, upward, massive weight gain over a period of several years. I’m certain now that the emotional trauma of losing my mother at such a young age and dealing with her prolonged illness had thrown my body out of balance and disrupted my metabolism.
With my many attempts to lose weight, I fell into a cyclic pattern of low calorie dieting paired with one to two hour long work outs without any results. There was even a time when I was eating as few as 800 calories of food combined with frantic exercise to lose weight. With my background in Physical Therapy and based on the calories in/calories out theory, I should have been ultra-thin and in the best shape of my life. Still, the reality was that no matter how little I ate or how hard I worked out, I continued to gain. My weight just ballooned up until I was on the brink of 200 pounds. It was at that moment on the scale that was my wake up call, the catalyst for change that I needed.
It was at this low point in my life (when my weight was the highest) that I discovered alternative medicine and developed an interest in natural health and healing. I started reading books by physicians who were treating and curing people of illness without drugs and using all natural remedies and herbs. I learned the role of nutrition in health and healing and how detoxifying bodily systems essentially allows the body’s own natural healing ability to appear. I learned of the importance of a holistic way of life to achieve wellness that encompasses the physical, the emotional, the mental, and the spiritual aspects of us all.
Now, 60 pounds lighter and years later, I’m more grateful than ever for the HCG Diet and the positive changes in my life. I’m also incredibly happy to share this information with you, cheer you on, and encourage you every step of the way with my books and recipes. I won’t say this program is easy; it takes discipline and commitment. It is my greatest wish to see you achieve your own best body and life. I hope that you will use the information in this book to help guide you and support you on the way to successful weight loss with the HCG Diet. HCG — Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. A natural medication often used as a fertility treatment; researched and developed for the HCG Diet Protocol for weight loss by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons.
HHCG — Homeopathic HCG.
LIW — Last Injection Weight. The weight recorded on the last day of HCG injection. Used to monitor weight during Phase 3 (Stabilization Phase).
LSDW — Last Sublingual Dose Weight. The weight recorded on the last day of HCG sublingual dosage.
VLCD — Very Low Calorie Diet. The term used to describe the 500 calorie HCG Phase of the diet.
IU — International Unit. A term that identifies the dosage of a medication (for example, the amount of HCG taken daily during the HCG Phase of the diet is 125-200 IU).
SL — Sublingual. Placing a medication under the tongue where it is absorbed by the capillaries and into the bloodstream. HCG can be taken this way as an alternative to injections.
SC/SQ — Subcutaneous. Injecting a medication just under the skin rather than into the muscle.
IM — Intramuscular. Injecting a medication into the muscle.
R1 — (Round 1), R2 (Round 2), etc. An abbreviation to identify a specific round of HCG. Helpful when there is a lot of weight to lose and multiple rounds are undertaken.
Loading — The term to describe the first two days on the HCG when it is required to eat large amounts of high fat foods in preparation for the Very Low Calorie Diet.
Nutritional Loading — Eating very healthy foods and supplements before and after the HCG Phase (Phase 2 or P2) to promote optimal health.
Prep and Load — (Phase 1 or P1) Preparing for the HCG Diet and loading properly before beginning the HCG Phase of the diet.
The HCG Phase — (Phase 2 or P2) The use of HCG in combination with a Very Low Calorie Diet (500 calories per day).
The Stabilization Phase — (Phase 3 or P3) The 3 week period of a varied, normal calorie diet with the exception of starch
