Karina Inkster

Owner and head fitness nut at Ki Health & Fitness in Vancouver, BC, Karina Inkster is a certified personal trainer with a Master’s degree in Gerontology, specializing in health and aging. Karina has been weight training, swimming, running, cycling, and power yoga-ing her way to fitness since 2003. Karina deals with a potentially life-threatening allergic condition which prohibits her from training after having eaten within 8 hours, in case a food triggers a serious allergic reaction when coupled with exercise. She also faces severe seasonal allergies and asthma that limit her activity for 5 months each year, as well as weekly allergy shots after which she can't train - again due to anaphylaxis risk. Yet, with careful planning and unwavering dedication, she trains consistently 6 days per week (even while in full time graduate school and working 3 jobs). Karina understands the many challenges involved in maintaining an active lifestyle, and aims to live by example in overcoming her own obstacles. She helps clients to enjoy working out, and to fit regular exercise into their busy lives. When she’s not lifting weights, swimming, running, working with clients, or writing, Karina plays Australian didgeridoo and piano, designs and creates jewelry, makes paper art with Origami and paper filigree (a.k.a. quilling), or cranks up her favourite reggae music.

WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR HEALTH

A letter to you, dear reader.

    Dearest Reader,

This book is for you if you’re interested in leading a healthy, active lifestyle that helps you to feel good, look good, and live a long life free of illness. Sounds good, right? Trust me, it is. But why is it that so many of us lose our way when it comes to health and fitness? Why are so many of us overweight or obese? Why do we feel so much tiredness and lack of energy? Why do we have so many health issues and diseases like diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancer?

I think we all know the answers. Being active and eating right can be hard work. Hey, if it were easy, everyone would be walking around with ripped abs and size 2 jeans! Unhealthy, sugary, or fatty foods are usually delicious and difficult to give up. Many people don’t know where to start, especially given the overwhelming amount of health-related information available out there. We’re busier than ever in our daily lives and so much is expected of us that taking time for our own health doesn’t seem to fit into our schedules. Add to all this the personal barriers many of us face, like lacking the motivation or interest it takes to start up an active lifestyle, and you’ve got a host of reasons why people are inactive, overweight, and disease-riddled.

I’m here to call a big, fat, bullshit. And here you thought I was going to commiserate with you! Often, we mix up the words barriers and excuses. Sometimes they can be the same thing, but all too often, instead of working to overcome barriers to active living, we use them to explain away our inactive, unhealthy lifestyles. I don’t know how or why to start adopting a healthier lifestyle! is a legitimate barrier to beginning. It becomes an excuse, however, when someone learns about and knows the importance of healthy living but doesn’t take the responsibility to get informed about how to start.

So, congratulations to you for taking the step to read this book! It will get you well on your way to being armed with what you need to know to kick ass at living a healthy, enjoyable, fulfilling lifestyle.

To me, health means not just eating the right kinds of foods, but leading an active lifestyle and enjoying good mental health, too.

We all know that exercise and a nutritious diet are important for attaining good health. But many of us don’t know exactly why. What’s in it for us? Why should we care? Here’s a list to get you started.

7 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR HEALTH

    1. You’re going to live longer. Being active and eating a healthy diet mean you’re much, much less likely to croak at an early age. That’s a pretty major benefit, if you ask me. And it’s not just about you – think about all your friends and family members who want you to be
