PREFACE

Not too long ago, I became both fascinated and irritated with so-called psychics on TV. They were always talking to deceased persons on the other side. If you are reading this book, I know that you have seen them; I do not have to mention their names. The people they were communicating with on the other side always seemed to speak for some reason, through initials, unclear names and vague statements. I am sure you have heard the routine. It goes something like this.

The entertainer says to a large group in the audience, I am getting a message from someone with an M in their name, an older man…Michael, Mark, Mathew…

Someone in the audience will comment, My father was Matt.

The entertainer looks a little shocked and replies, Yes, he passed over, didn’t he?

The person looks amazed, how did he know that?

I wondered how these people could talk to the dead, so I did some research. As I dug deeper, I found that some people could also predict the future and tell people things about themselves that no one could know. Friends and neighbors who have visited psychics told me there were people out there who could tell them amazing things about their lives that no one could have possibly known. During a personal visit a card reader, we discussed my life and my feelings about life and the people around me. I was not impressed since I had to answer her questions before she would make a statement. Many of these psychics used methods that were in the occult or their own secret divination methods. These included telepathy, clairvoyance, divination, precognition, psycho kinesis, medium ship, mind control or some device such as Tarot, palm reading or tealeaves reading.

All the psychics I investigated had one thing in common; they asked many questions. Whatever mystic divination method they used to contact the dead or tell the future, they still did the same thing, talking to the sitter and getting more information from them. I realized that they all used the types of same phrases,

I feel that you …, does that sound right?

There is a … in your life, what might this refer to?

At times you are …, while at other times you are …. Would you say this is along the right lines for you?

My background is deeply rooted in science, its methods, and experimentation, repeatability and cause and effect relationships. I wanted to see if there really was something scientific to all of this. I started my investigation like most people in this day, with the internet. I went to Google, did some searches, and found out how these psychics do what they do.

A word of note is necessary here. I will not say that all psychics are frauds. There may be people who can read the minds and the future. There is no proof they do not exist. These people truly believe that they have occult powers; that they can see the future or have other mental powers. Real or not, the term used for these people is shut-eyes. They are not out to fool you or feloniously take your money. They truly believe they have clairvoyant powers. Without consciously thinking about it or realizing it, they use the same techniques put forward this book. They can naturally notice the clues presented to them without consciously analyzing them.

The converse, open-eyes, are people who knowingly use the techniques of the psychic intuitor. Open-eyes gather information about the person using various cold reading techniques, reading body language and other subtle methods.

A slightly more devious tool used by psychics is the warm or hot reading. Mostly professional fraud artists use this method. A warm or hot reading, depending on the extent, is the foreknowledge of information about the sitter. Information is about the sitter before the reading. This trick, when used properly, gives the impression that the psychic, or fraud artist truly has clairvoyant powers. This usually precedes some kind of fraud. Ethical intuitors may use prior knowledge during a reading obtained during previous readings to enhance the current reading but does not try to extract money or perform other illegal actions.

It seems women have a natural instinct to understand the deeper meaning in conversations and actions. They do not do this consciously, but use their feelings and hunches to generate information, i.e. Feminine Intuition. This is a probably hereditary trait in women. My feeling is throughout history they have been the prime child raisers. In the first few years of life, the child communicates to the mother without a spoken language. From the very start, the mother seems to know what the child needs or wants without it speaking a word. The mother reacts to the child’s sounds and motions. During the early stages of speech, the mother questions the child on its needs and acts in accordance with her intuition. This natural ability to decipher non-verbal clues is why many of the shut-eye psychics are women.

My investigations led me into the world of cold reading, body language and psychic fraud. My research found the methods psychics use are quite easy to learn and duplicate. I studied these techniques and experimented on my own. To my amazement, it became clear to me how to do these tricks. I was so successful in using these methods to do readings; I became a psychic intuitor doing readings at parties.

I present to you, my dear reader, the information I have found. Do what you will with the information it is up to you. Use it to keep a level head when someone presents to you some mystical information and tells you that your late Uncle Lewis is telling you to give the medium all your money. On the other hand, use it to laugh at psychics who talk to the people who have crossed over or help police find missing people. Alternatively, use it in your daily lives to gather information about people you meet. Or become a psychic intuitor like myself and give readings at parties for fun and a little spending cash.

CHAPTER 1

BECOMING A PSYCHIC INTUITOR

The word intuitor is not a real word. If you type it into a word processor, it will always show up in the spell check. I have taken it from Michael Shermer’s work Psychic for a Day: How I Learned Tarot Cards, Palm Reading, Astrology, and Mediumship in 24 Hours. In this article, he describes how he filmed a television show with Bill Nye (Bill Nye the Science Guy.) in Seattle, Washington, for a PBS science series called Eye on Nye. Both Mr. Shermer and Mr. Nye are extremely fascinating lecturers and writers. I highly recommend them for your reading.

I use the term psychic intuitor for a person who uses techniques in this book for entertainment and for psychic readings. Often Mentalists are included in this genre. Mentalists perform a magic act that gives the illusion they have greatly developed mental or intuitive abilities. These performers use many tricks in their shows such as psycho kinesis (moving or manipulating objects), telepathy (mind reading), divination (attempt to gain an answer to a situation or question), clairvoyance (ability to gather information about an object or place), Psychometry (gathering information by touching objects), precognition (knowledge of future information), hypnosis, mind control, memory feats and rapid mathematics. The key word in the previous sentence is tricks.

What is a Psychic Intuitor?

I will use the word intuitor throughout this book meaning the person giving the reading using Open-eyes techniques. The intuitor gives a reading to the person being read or the sitter. The intuitor is a performer who presents entertainment of a psychic nature using the techniques in this book. The whole focus is on entertainment, such as at a party doing readings for guests or a presentation in a group setting.

A psychic intuitor is different from a magician. When a magician does a trick, everyone knows it is a trick except for a 3 year old in the first row. When performing a magic trick, there is no room for error. If the magician fails to complete the trick successfully, the whole act is in question. However, with a psychic entertainer, even errors are viewed in a positive light as shown later in the book.

A psychic intuitor should not make claims of possessing supernatural powers. They do not need to advertise that they do not have these powers but they should not make supernatural claims. They are entertainers and provide the sitter with a warm feeling.

The intuitor uses cold reading, body language and his knowledge of human personalities to draw out information from the sitter. I will use this word, sitter, to indicate the person to whom the intuitor is giving a reading. The intuitor uses the information received during the reading and feeds it back to the sitter in a mystically received way. Using these methodologies, the intuitor can appear to be almost 80% accurate while covering up the actual 80% they are wrong.

What qualities make a person a good psychic entertainer?

Primarily, they must like people. Since they are in front of people through the whole time, either one-on-one or in front of an audience, they must project a real interest. If the intuitor is having a bad day, he must put it behind you, For The Show. Smile and be congenial - no one likes a grouch. If you have an axe to grind or are out to get someone, find another way to do it. If the intuitor does not treat the sitters in a courteous and friendly way, they will not return.

Next, they must be good listeners. People like to talk about themselves and the good psychic intuitor will listen closely and use the information freely given later. Often during a reading, the sitter will divulge information that the intuitor can feed later in a different manor, appearing to have received the information from the cards, crystal ball or other device they are using. This will make the intuitor look like he is accurate and has powers beyond the normal realm.

The session may become a relief session for the sitter. The sitter will sometimes open up to the intuitor almost as they would with a counselor. The intuitor should listen to her story. Releasing one’s feelings is a natural and necessary process. Often people will seek out a psychic to contact people who have passed to help with their personal closure. When faced with this situation, the intuitor should comprise between listening and continuing the reading; but remember the intuitor is not trained to be a counselor and act appropriately.

In addition to being a good listener, they must be observant. As Yogi Berra once said, You can observe a lot by watching. The accomplished intuitor will notice non-verbal clues, both visual and audible, used by the sitter. This is important to a good reading. Observe how the person dresses, the kind of jewelry she is wearing or the condition of her clothes.

Watching body language is very important during a reading. It will give you clues how the reading is going. For example, if the intuitor observes a body language signal that indicates displeasure or disbelief, they should immediately change the course of the reading to correct this. There have been many volumes of information written on how to read body language. Later chapters discuss non-verbal clues in some detail. Nevertheless, it is wise to sharpen your skills by watching people and doing further research in this area.

The psychic intuitor must have a good head for facts and details. He must remember the terms and relationships associated with the divination method. Many people that have had readings performed and have an understanding of the reading method such as cards or palms. The intuitor must know the fundamentals of the divination method to impress the sitter. For example, when using tarot cards the intuitor should know the names and general meanings of the cards. When the intuitor uses palmistry, they must use the proper names for the lines and mounds.

The intuitor must have a good understanding of human nature and the stages of life. When a young person sits down in front of the intuitor, the reading obviously should not mention retirement or changing careers. It should focus on issues relevant for a person in that stage of life. Knowing the problems and concerns of people in different stages of life will keep the reading interesting and focused on the subject.

The intuitor should keep abreast of current trends and human statistics. Appendix F gives facts drawn from the US censes. Similar information is available from the government in the intuitor’s own country. The intuitor should know that Disco is not at all popular now. However, when doing a reading for someone who lived in the disco era, platform shoes and white John Travolta type jackets, mentioning Disco could invoke positive responses.

Lastly, but certainly not least, the psychic intuitor must be a good showman. He has to be fast on his feet to keep the reading moving. No two readings are alike. The intuitor must be able to think quickly and adjust the presentation to the needs of the sitter. The intuitor must remember to old showbiz adage Give ‘em what they want and they’ll come back. In reality, a reading is only a show that the sitter pays for. If they leave happy, they will think the intuitor is the great and they will come back.

Other Uses

One can use the cold reading methods and the other techniques given in this book in many other areas of life. There are many times in one’s life that there is a need or desire to draw out information from another person. Cold reading is a way to interact with another person that draws out information from the other person without them realizing. Learning even the most basic tools of cold reading, phases of life and non-verbal communication will reveal much information about another person.

In the social arena, we use the techniques in this book every day. When you first meet a person, you immediately get an impression of that person from the clothes they are wearing or the mannerisms they present during the meeting. This is often called the first impression. However, people with the skills of the intuitor can determine a lot about the person within a few minutes of conversation. If one uses typical human facial expressions, body gestures, movements, and non-verbal communications along with proper questioning techniques, they will have a good understanding of the person they are dealing with.

Using cold reading methods in sales and business is an obvious example. In the 2005 BBC series Hustle about a couple of hustlers in London, the characters talk about using cold reading to get a mark (person to be hustled) interested in a business plan. Unfortunately, this is using cold reading techniques for devious purposes. The same techniques can be used to understand a customer’s needs, lower a new customer resistance and get appointments.

Cold reading techniques can be used on both sides of the job interview. The interviewer can gather a lot of information the candidate for a job by reading their facial expressions, body language and nonverbal communications. In an interview, using intuitor skills can certainly help an employer get to know the candidate on a deeper level. Conversely, the candidate can modify their actions to present themselves as the perfect person for the position.

Romance and relationships are another area that the information in this book is useful. A search in the internet of how to pick up girls/guys will often link you to a site that suggests using cold reading. The methods these sites use are the same as those used in cold reading but obviously directed to the person in question. For women, it is the subtle uses of body language to attract a man to them, the flick of the hair or the showing of the neck. These moves are natural and called the relationship ritual or courting dance. Knowing the rules and manners of the dance will increase one’s chances of success.

Another area that the use of cold reading techniques can be used is as a coercive aid to criminal interrogators. A group of psychologists at the University of Liverpool
