PART ONE

About The Game

It’s fun to play cards and just about everyone of us has done it at one time or another. I remember playing as a child and it was a great aid to my learning of numbers and letters. Eventually I began to view card playing differently when I discovered that you can win money if you learn to play well. I liked that a lot and over the years I’ve been able to hone my skills so that I can play poker or most other card games with a good degree of success.

The game of poker has risen to new heights of popularity in recent years, primarily because of more and more televised poker tournaments, and especially the World Series of Poker.

Most of us are content to play with our friends, with an occasional foray to Las Vegas or Atlantic City. There we get to test our skills against other players as intent as we are at winning money.

We do need to remember that once we’re playing in a casino or a card club the play is much more serious. We can win money if we’re a good enough player, but oftentimes the other players you’ll face are as good or better than you. The rules in a more official setting are strictly adhered to and you’ll have to pay close attention to everything that is going on in and around the game.

It seems likely, since you’re reading this book that you haven’t reached the level of sophistication in your play that will surpass enough players in a stepped up situation to best all the other players who likely play frequently and well. My hope is that after absorbing the contents of this book you will be much better prepared to meet that challenge.

I do believe that almost anyone who learns the game well and sticks to a set of predetermined parameters for themselves can win money playing poker. You do have a better chance at winning in a poker game that you do playing slot machines or roulette.

When you play poker you get to choose how and where you play and you get to make all the decisions that determine how well you do. You can be conservative or aggressive. You can bet small or go for broke (be careful with this one because that is likely what you’ll become if you aren’t very sure about the bet).

You can choose the casino, the dealer and the table where you will play. You can elect to play with friends at home or with strangers in a card club or casino. You can elect to drink alcoholic beverages or just stick with water while you’re playing. (It’s usually a bad idea to have more than one alcoholic drink while gambling since you risk altering your better judgment on how much you spend and the strategies you use.)

You get to set the winnings that will be enough or the loss level that tells you it’s time to stop. You can rely on playing rules that you have established or use your intuition when you think something may happen.

You are in charge when you play poker and every decision that affects your play is up to you with the exception of which cards you will be dealt. No other player knows what cards they will be dealt either so on that aspect all players are equal.

All of this makes your random odds much better when playing poker instead of slots or roulette if you take the time to learn to be a good card player.

In my opinion it’s not a good idea to play poker on electronic machines. Winning and losing is predetermined by computer programmers and the chances that live card playing offers are missing.

To win on electronic machines you have to be at the right place and at the right time when the computerized machine reaches the point where a winning hand is dealt.

I also think it is a bad idea to play poker or any other gambling games online. You don’t know who you’re dealing with and you have absolutely no means to know if the games are fair or rigged.

With live card play you can be assured that the games are well regulated and that winning hands can and do appear again and again.

ABOUT THE GAME

Everyone seems to be playing poker nowadays in casinos, at home, or in card clubs. There’s a reason why, of course. You can win money playing poker if you learn the things you need to be consistent and disciplined. Besides that, poker is fun to play.

Winning at poker requires that you learn good skills and develop good discipline. There are a number of ways to enhance your chances of winning and to reduce your losses in the long run. It isn’t possible for any player to win all the time, but you can reduce the times that you do lose. This will require very good skills and intuition, as well as the wisdom to use your skills in the best possible way every single time you play.

In order to be a successful poker player, the cards you have been dealt have to have a higher rank than the cards in your opponent’s hand or you have to do a good job of convincing the other players that your hand is better. That’s called bluffing, and you will need to be very good at it to win by using it in a poker game. So you have two ways to win at poker: have the best ranking cards at the showdown or win when all the other players drop out.

Almost every type of poker game requires you to have the best possible hand of the five cards you’re dealt in order to win.

Card hands are usually, but not always made up of five cards, and the best hand wins regardless of the number of cards required.

The four card suits are not important in poker. All four are of equal rank. What does count is the card rank, such as ace, king, queen, etc.

PART TWO

Things About Playing Poker

It’s important to select the right table when you play poker. You should change tables whenever you believe the one you are playing at isn’t right for you. It’s important that you feel at ease, comfortable, and confident where you’re playing. Change tables if this is not the case. It is also important that you’re having fun while playing. It shouldn’t be like a day at work when you’re doing something you choose to do for entertainment.

Your best arrangement is to play at a table where there are seven or fewer other players. This is about the maximum that you can evaluate for ability for your best odds of beating.

You should feel comfortable and confident. You should also be having a good time.

Bluffing is not easy to accomplish but if you think you can pull it off, then take a shot at acting as if your hand is stronger than it is. It takes discipline and skill to act stronger than your hand suggests.

Always be aware that winning and losing are both possibilities when you play poker.

It is important that you stay in control at all times. If you have pre-planned your play, then stick to it unless there is a good reason to vary. Don’t worry if you are not winning every hand. With a good plan and good discipline you’ll be alright in the long run.

Play carefully, but remain open to the possibility that you will sometimes need to take risks.

Taking risks when necessary is not the same as being reckless.

Rid yourself of tells, which are signals your body gives about your poker hand. Have someone you trust watch you while you play to determine if you react to good actions or bad actions in specific ways. Eye movement, body language and facial expressions should be closely guarded, and if necessary should be hidden with sunglasses or hats to prevent them being observed and used by your opponents.

Have enough money available to adjust as needed in completing your game plan.

Always be sure you can afford to lose any money that you bring into a casino. Don’t be reckless with your bets. Bet only when you feel good about your chances to win.

Regard each poker session as a step toward your ultimate goal of winning as much money as possible. Over time with practice and knowledge you will likely see more wins than losses.

Don’t play any gambling games that you don’t fully understand.

Play only games that you are good at and can win money by
