    Introduction

We live in an ecosystem where every living organism and non-living thing plays an important role in maintaining equilibrium. Each one takes part in the web of life that makes up a cycle. Every individual has a link to each member of the environment. Unfortunately, not all relationships created within the ecosystem bring forth sole benefits to each member. Parasitism highlights a non-mutual symbiosis wherein an organism benefits in the expense of another. An example of parasitism is an endemic infection affecting more than 120 Million people worldwide known as Filariasis.

At present, this infectious tropical and sub-tropical disease is posing threat of infection to more than one billion people in 83 countries of the world. Most of the cases worsen due to lack of education and awareness of the disease. The alarming number of victims infected with filarial nematode worms has stirred many government organizations and distinguished health agencies throughout the globe to conduct programs in treating and preventing the spread of the disease. In order to come up with a successful wellness campaign, you must take your part in protecting yourself and your family against Filariasis. It will be effective to start by acquainting yourself with the basic information that you need to know about the disease.

    History of Filariasis

Filariasis is considered one of the most age-old infectious diseases; it was around 4000 years ago. Its symptoms were first documented through artefacts in ancient Egypt and the Nok civilization in West Africa. Although the term filariasis was not used in ancient Chinese medical literature, its manifestations were noted in some early Chinese medical books during 600-700 B.C. However, it was through the ancient Greek literature that the first clear reference to the disease was drawn. Greek scholars identified the differences among similar symptoms of Filariasis compared to other skin infections like those of leprosy.
