Traditional South African Recipes
We all have memories from childhood of some delightful dish we enjoyed that grandma made for us when we were kids. I have endeavoured to put together all the recipes I could gather from friends and families, which their mothers and grandmas had used for many years, and always conjure up fond memories of the past.
Many of these recipes origin are not from South Africa, but with time they have become part of the culture as chefs and cooks have changed them to suit the ethnic ingredients and taste buds. They are all tried and tested recipes that have been used for years so there is no need for any flops
.
South Africans love their food and also love trying out new recipes as well. As a tribute to their beautiful sunny climate a lot of their entertaining is done outdoors. The traditional Braai
– a barbeque – is the South Africans favourite way of entertaining. Any excuse is good enough to invite friends and family over for a braai
.
There is a whole culture around what is the correct
way of cooking the meat; and which cuts of beef, lamb and pork are the best to use. The South Africans have access to many venison cuts as well, so you could likely be invited to a braai
where Impala or Kudu venison was on the menu.
If you are not familiar with South African cuisine, I sincerely hope that this book will make you want to try some of our delectable dishes or persuade you to come and visit our beautiful country one
