Cat Breeds - Linda Sacco
So you think you want a cat? With over 30 breeds to choose from (and new breeds being developed) there is a cat for everyone. But before that kitty has you at meow
there is much to consider before you fall for that irresistible ball of fur!
Are you home all day or will kitty be left to their own devices? How much play time do you have for your pet each day? Some cats want your company all day, every day, some don’t mind playing with you on a strictly part-time basis. In any case, it is never advisable to let your cat roam free outdoors – the threat of diseases, cars and dogs is too great and seriously erodes your pet’s health and wellbeing. Some cats, however, will be happy to explore a secure outdoor enclosure in your backyard.

If you’re happy with a Chatty Cathy than feel free to converse with the likes of the Siamese. If this all sounds rather annoying, try a quieter breed like the Russian Blue.
Would you like grooming to be a minimal chore or a daily duty? What about bathing? Pick a coat type accordingly. Also take note of light shedders if you are a neat freak!
tmp_05d9c2a1db60c87a66d550b90cf095ef_crvgM7_html_4a4bd50d.pngGot babies? Got other pets? Many cats welcome playtime with children, but others would prefer to avoid youngsters. Your existing cat and other pets should also be considered when buying a new cat. Some breeds of dog are more inclined to view cats as prey. Similarly, a cat’s instinct (although dimmed by generations of indoor living) is to hunt birds, fish and rodents. Introducing a new cat to an existing pet cat has its considerations also. Certain breeds prefer spending time with their own or a similar breed. Use common sense and plan safe introductions between new and established pets. With some time and effort, your household can accommodate a peaceful (and adorable) cohort of pets.

Lastly, even though cats are largely healthy and live long lives, some breeds are more prone to illnesses than others. If you’re reluctant to lose a cat early or don’t have the fattest wallet in town, steer clear on
