GOSPEL PREACHING – JOHN CALVIN
Calvin’s Sermons on Isaiah’s Prophecy of the Death and Passion of Christ
By J. E. Hazlett Lynch
General Introduction:
Gospel Preaching – what a glorious, timely and exalted theme for any Christian and reformed conference to consider! What a theme to fill the soul, the heart and the mind! What a subject to absorb us for the next two days! To spend the next six sessions thinking about the Gospel, being challenged by the Gospel, being touched by the Gospel, and having the Gospel ministered to us is an awesome and rare privilege indeed. And this is what is in store for all of us during these two special days.
My task for the opening session this morning is to deliver a paper on John Calvin's Gospel Preaching, and focusing in on his Sermons on Isaiah’s Prophecy of the Death and Passion of Christ (Isa.52:13 – 53:12), preached in St Pierre's Cathedral in Geneva by the highly respected Reformer.
These were not mere theological or academic writings, but messages from the heart of God to a minister's mixed congregation of very ordinary people. Nor were they polemical or controversial discourses; what we have in them is a servant of Christ bringing God's Word to his church members and associates in a particular place and at a particular time, the summer of 1558.
I approached the task of preparing this paper by asking myself a few questions. How can any man deliver a 'lecture' on these sermons of John Calvin? Is it even possible to give a lecture on his sermons, without robbing them of their ethos and impact? I concluded that it cannot be done without, in my view, doing a massive injustice to the preacher who first preached them, let alone his sermons. I don't know of anyone who could read, reread, and study these powerful, Christ-filled evangelistic sermons of John Calvin in any kind of detached way, and then deliver a lecture on his findings.
What I found was that in reading them I was being ‘fired up’ to preach these various themes set out in the sermons, and to do this with an evangelistic zeal and purpose that will grip hearts and convert souls.
Indeed, I trust that my analysis of these sermons will renew your evangelistic zeal for your future ministerial work, and mine. As well as this being the 'first paper,' it has, in a very real sense, been transformed into the 'opening sermon' of this year's conference; and I trust that this will find general approval with attendees.
So my delightful task has become somewhat impossible - I have to distil seven one-hour sermons of approximately 6000 words each into a one hour lecture-sermon. The impossible, I think I can deal with; but, if you are hoping for a miracle, that will take a little longer!
Now, any time I read any of Calvin's sermons, I discovered something very important. I discovered that his sermons did something to me, something of a deeply spiritual nature. They had the effect of washing me, cleansing me, sanctifying me. They inspired and encouraged me; they always have that profound spiritual effect on me. They help me to be further separated unto Christ and His Gospel in a particular way. They show me what it is to preach Christ in
