About this ebook

WE HUMANS are social animals. We spend most of our time relating to other people.

Relationships are one of the most important things in our lives. And yet we rarely take the time to examine our relationships objectively and determine what they add to our lives. Do they enhance or detract? What makes the good relationships work? How can we ensure they continue to do so? Why do others detract? And, what can we do about it?

Dr. Robert Broenen, a psychologist, and his daughter, Dr. Mari Broenen, a university professor, explored the dynamics of interpersonal relating and created the Heart : Mind model--a simple and effective system for identifying, evaluating, understanding and optimizing your interactions with others. Additional free articles by Drs. Broenen are available at www.RealPsychSolutions.com.

Heart : Mind—Warmth and Light in Your Relationships is a practical guidebook for making the most of all your relationships--from the casual to the intimate.

Reader's Comments

"Your book was a godsend for me. I was troubled by a couple of relationships for some time this year. Your tools for examination of these friendships were very helpful. The work you have done is worthwhile, practical and accessible...You presented the contact process so well with transact vs engage. I had become somewhat wary about engaging in the past but am becoming more open to it. Also on making my own choices rather than being 'chosen'." Judith Strupp Green, Anthropologist

"A terrific book. It’s action-oriented, short enough that people will read it and has a light tone. I... am beginning to think maybe I’m not really too old for another self-help book... I’ve thought of several relationships that could use a tune-up and have acted on one so far." Warren Gibson, Professor

"The book addresses many important issues in the process of establishing relationships in a hands-on, approachable way." Dale Novina, Executive Coach

"I liked it...I think it’s easy to read, well written and infinitely applicable." Linda Haines, Consul

    Foreword

You want to live a happy life. Most of what you do every day involves relating with other people. So it follows that to live in a satisfying and fulfilling way, you need to relate to others in an effective manner.

Healthy, happy and successful relating doesn’t just happen. To do it right, you need knowledge about relating and skill in applying what you know.

This book shows you a special method for developing that capability within yourself and using that method in all your relationships.

In order to have successful relationships, you need to pay attention to how you invest both your heart and your mind in each individual relationship.

    • Your Heart represents your caring about the other person.

    • Your Mind represents your thinking about the other person.

Hence, we call special attention to this as Heart : Mind, the ratio of emotion (warmth) and thought (light) that you personally bring to your relationships.

Heart : Mind relating is based on a model created by the authors which encompasses four distinctly different kinds of relationships. Each kind is appropriate for a different part of your relating life, from the most casual to the most intimate. Because you are in control of how much Heart and Mind you devote to engaging with another person, you can create different kinds of relationships by varying the blend, or mix of your Heart and your Mind.

This personal guidebook will help you:

    1) Identify the kinds of relationships you have.

    2) Enhance your relating skills by clarifying your understanding of how relating works.

    3) Cultivate the right kind of relationship to suit your needs and those of the other person.

    4) Apply these skills artfully in your various relationships throughout your life.

The book will provide you with guided opportunities to thoughtfully examine each of your important relationships in order to enhance the better ones, figure out what to do with the others and anticipate what kinds of relationships you want to create in the future.

Rich rewards can come your way if you use this book as a personal guide.

    It’s up to you!

The Heart : Mind Model of Interpersonal Relationships by Robert Broenen and Mari Broenen.

    PART ONE: YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

With Whom Do You Have Relationships?

Because we’re all social animals, we all have relationships. We just take this for granted. We don’t usually ask ourselves:

    • How many relationships do I have?

    • What kinds of relationships are these?

    • Which are the ones that are critical to my quality of life and which are expendable?

    • What do I need to do to do a good job of managing my portfolio of relationships?

This guidebook shows you how to enhance your relationships using a new approach that we develop here. A good place to start this process is for you to identify the relatively small number of relationships that form the core of your relating life. For just about everyone, most of our relating time is spent with a relatively small number of people—perhaps a dozen maximum.¹ This chapter helps you make a considered list of your most important relationships, as the first step in the process.

    Who Gets on Your List?

To get on your list, each person must be someone who is in some way important in your life.
