INTRODUCTION
Every girl likes to wear pretty things, and if you make a pretty wearable item yourself, then it makes wearing it that much more satisfying. The sense of accomplishment and pride you feel from making something with your own two hands is something you can’t buy at a store. While there are thousands of ways to get creative and make your own clothing and fashion accessories; one of the most popular and most versatile ways is by making your own jewelry. Whether it’s for a hobby or for profit; making jewelry is a very rewarding pastime and it allows you to use your creativity freely to make an original and wearable piece of art.
It’s important to remember there is no right or wrong way to make jewelry. When making handmade jewelry of your own design you are only limited by your imagination and creativity. While some jewelry makers can just whip out a piece off the cuff,
others (myself included) often need to develop original design ideas over time.
Often, I get ideas while I’m doing something else- usually another piece I am creating. If you find that you often become inspired while doing something else it is very important to have a notebook or paper of some kind handy. I always recommend that beginners do this because you never know when an idea will just pop into your head and you want to be able to either write it down or if you are like me, sketch the piece so when you are free you can collect the supplies and make it.
There are many reasons people decide to make jewelry. Often I find that people see a piece somewhere else and they want to make something similar because they like the design so much. Sometimes people just want to dabble
and see if jewelry making is right for them. I have even met people that already have a main outlet for their creativity but feel they want to do more than one kind of artistic activity.
I have at times recommended to others to try jewelry making as an outlet for stress relief, as I have found it to be a GREAT stress reliever. It helps you to concentrate on something other than whatever is causing you stress. When you are having a bad day, take a little break, breath and work on a jewelry piece for a couple of minutes. Don’t think about anything but the project in front of you. When you are done, you’ll be calm, collected, and ready to face the rest of your day.
WHAT DO I NEED?
You don’t need to go out and spend a fortune on materials for your jewelry making needs. While it is a good idea to buy specific things like Modge Podge, jump rings, and jeweler’s pliers (I use the pliers on every project). A lot of times you can use things you have around the house to make gorgeous jewelry pieces. Items such as like left over sequins from last year’s Halloween costume, scraps of fabric, or even pop tops from soda cans can provide supplies for some fantastic original pieces. In addition discount or dollar stores are a great place to get supplies without spending a bunch of money. This is especially great if you plan to sell your creations, as you can maximize your profit.
SHOULD I SELL MY JEWELRY?
It can be very rewarding to sell your jewelry creations. Unfortunately, it can also be very difficult because there are so many sellers of jewelry both in real world market places and on the
