PROLOGO

Entrano ANTIGONE e ISMENE.

ANTIGONE. Ismene, sorella cara, di tutto il male che ci viene da Edipo c’è qualcosa che Zeus ci abbia risparmiato? Sofferenza — delitto, vergogna o disonore — niente che non abbia visto tra le nostre sciagure. E adesso questo editto che poco fa Creonte ha proclamato a tutta la città. Hai sentito? O non conosci il male che si rovescia sugli amici?

ISMENE. Nessuna notizia, Antigone, né felice né triste, da quando siamo state private dei nostri fratelli, morti tutti e due lo stesso giorno l’uno per mano dell’altro. E da stanotte, dopo la partenza dell’esercito di Argo, non so altro, e non sono né più felice né infelice di prima.

ANTIGONE. Per questo ti ho portato fuori dalle mura, per parlarti da sola.

ISMENE. Tu hai in mente qualcosa.

ANTIGONE. Dei nostri due fratelli, Creonte ha dato sepoltura ad uno e dichiarato indegno l’altro. Dicono che abbia sepolto Eteocle con giusto diritto e secondo la legge, perché sia onorato sottoterra dai morti, e che invece abbia proibito di seppellire e piangere Polinice, morto anche lui miseramente. Che resti insepolto e senza pianto, un dolce tesoro per gli uccelli voraci.
