Poetic Ray

Rachel spent most of her youth in South Carolina, but it was in Georgia where she found her pen. She began writing regularly at the age of 17. She later earned the name Poetic Ray. Venturing into spoken word, Poetic Ray performed on Atlanta's own radio station V-103 three years in a row, and she graced the mic at several spoken word venues: Apache Cafe, Mocha Match, Vibes Nightclub, etc. Her first book of poems was self published through blurb.com, followed by 4 others and 2 novelettes titled Consequences and Repercussions. She is working on several novels: one, the completion the first two! Poetic Ray is also a writer of stage plays and songs, and she plans to produce a spoken word cd in the future. She earned her BA in English in 2014.

    Prologue:

The bar was crowded, but she found a table for two in the corner. After ordering a Long Island Iced Tea, she crossed her legs and enjoyed the scenery. It wasn’t long before Mr. Tall, Dark, and Sexy approached her. She knew that he would. He had been staring her down since she walked into Dugans.

    Is this seat taken?

Do you see anyone sitting there? Better yet, have you seen anybody since I got here?

    Busted, huh? he asked.

Busted, but that’s cool. Nothing wrong with looking, I suppose. she replied. He sat down after the lovely lady gestured with her hand, inviting him to join her.

So what are you doing here all alone? Drinking at that..

Well I only planned to have this one drink, but uh.. I don’t mind getting some time in with me. Feel me?

Oh yeah, I feel ya. So what’s that you drinking on? he inquired.

What? You wanna buy me another one? You must be planning on getting me home safely. she said seductively. She knew this game all too well. In fact, she had taken a taxi, because she knew she’d have more than one drink. She also knew that there was a possibility she’d meet someone..

Opening his jacket to show his badge, he said, Oh I can definitely get you home safe Miss Lady. So do you want that drink?

Why not? Long Island.. No make that a Strong Island Iced Tea. The two sat and had drinks for a good hour before they realized they didn’t know each other’s names.

So what’s your name? he asked.

    Robyn.. Yours? Officer Friendly?

You can call me that, but my name is David.

So David, are you ready to get out of here or what? He could see the desire in her eyes. He didn’t have to be in for his late night shift for another two hours.

I’m ready when you are Robyn.. She got up from the table and placed her hand in his.

Lead the way Officer Friendly.. They walked out of the bar and got into David’s car. Pulling up at the gas station he asked, So are we going to your place or...

No baby, any place other than mine.

    Chapter 1 (I Was Wondering)

At the hospital, after everything had died down, and Stephanie was tucked away in a holding cell.. David returned to Michelle’s room for some questions. Before he could enter, he was stopped by Chiyanne, who hadn’t left Michelle’s side.

May I speak with you before you go in there? Chiyanne asked the puzzled police officer.

Sure. Would you like to grab some coffee? David replied.

That’ll be great. The two of them walked the halls of the hospital until they found the cafeteria. They ordered their beverages and grabbed a table. Sitting in silence for a few moments, David spoke up.

So what’s on your mind? Chiyanne, right?

Yeah that’s right. So uh, I don’t want to hold you up, but I just need to ask you something. Chiyanne paused, unsure if she should proceed. With all that had gone on, she didn’t know if it was wise to dredge up anything.

Go ahead. Ask me anything. David had a gleam in his eyes. This woman in front of him was so fine, it was distracting.

Do you know Michelle? You know, on a personal level? She had to blurt it out before she changed her mind.

Naw. Um, naw. Why do you ask? David wondered.

It’s just that I could’ve sworn I saw a look transpire between you two. I don’t know.. It was kinda weird because to my understanding, she never got around to meeting you.

I was just a bit surprised by the pregnancy. Marcus never mentioned it to me, and he spoke of Michelle often. David replied.

Oh, I see. Well that would be because she didn’t know about the baby until.. You know. Look, I’m sorry to trouble you. I just didn’t want anything else to bring stress to my girl. She’s been through enough already. Chiyanne got up to excuse herself from the table.

Wait. What’s your hurry? You didn’t finish your coffee. David wanted a few more minutes with her.

I really need to get going. I have to peek in on Michelle and Jamal, and then I need to get to my shop.

Your shop, huh? You have your own business? David was impressed.

Yes. Crown Plaza. It’s a hair salon. She reached into her purse and pulled out a card. If, for any reason, you wish to contact me, here’s my card. My girl is getting out of here tomorrow, so I doubt if you’ll see me again around here. Reaching out her hand for him to shake, David kissed it instead.

I will definitely be contacting you. I must say, you are beautiful.. But hey, I know this isn’t the time or place...

You’re right. Can you give me a moment before you speak with Michelle? It won’t take me long. Chiyanne asked.

    "Sure. I will just
