One: What is canine parvovirus?
Canine parvovirus, parvo,
is a viral disease that is common in puppies under six months old. Parvovirus is a kind of virus that has many types. Each type normally affects specific species such as dogs, cats, or humans.
The type of parvovirus which affects dogs and other animals in the same family is called canine parvovirus. This virus is able to survive through high temperatures and is very stable. It may also remain unaffected by disinfectants and can survive without a host for many months, sometimes even a year. It causes diarrhea and vomiting in dogs and is among the most common animal diseases prevalent in dog shelters.
Canine parvovirus is not confined just to dogs – it is also found in foxes, wolves and coyotes. The disease was first discovered in the 1970s. The first canine parvovirus that was discovered was named CPV-1. This type of canine parvovirus was not very harmful and did not pose a serious threat to dogs. But in 1978, another type of the virus, named CPV-2, was discovered. CPV-2 was discovered to be very dangerous because it was transmitted very fast because the animal infected with it shed the virus in large numbers. In 1979, another type of the virus called CPV-2a came to light. This type was even more dangerous than CPV-2.
Today, canine parvovirus is one of the most widespread diseases found in dogs. If the disease is not diagnosed early enough, it can cause death. If it’s diagnosed early and an aggressive therapy is used for treatment, the dog can be saved.
