    Yorkshire, autumn 1822

Hours, days, weeks of interminable travel had finally rolled to a shuddering halt. The horse and cart stood before a mansion which would appear austere at its best and ominous the rest of the time. Claire did not realise she was seeing it at its best as the sun set, bathing it in rosy light. Even the sun, however, could not alter its hard, rigorous lines; symmetrical lines without ornamentation, striving for control and achieving it. Peyton Hall, home to Viscount Asterley, towered over her.

The child she cradled in her arms stirred and nestled closer to Claire’s breast with a sigh, and as much as her arms ached from holding her, she pulled her closer yet, to place a soft kiss on her brow.

Are you getting down or spending the night there? the driver asked from the tail-end of the cart. His manner was brusque but there was no real meanness meant. She supposed it had been the Viscount who had sent him to pick them up from the coaching inn, because he had asked for her by name, but she had asked him no questions. She had been saving her strength.

Claire was bone-weary and stiff. There was no way she could descend without disposing of the child first. As she tried to straighten the blanket to receive her charge, the driver had already released her trunk and was pulling it forward and off the end of the cart’s boards. As the trunk tipped off the end, the horse must have sensed the movement because he too moved, causing Claire to lose her balance for an instant. To prevent herself from falling on the child, she gripped the side of the cart and felt it cut into her fingers. It was a freak occurrence which had her on the border of tears, more from frustration than from the pain — the final aggravation at the end of a long tedious journey.

She withheld the sob which threatened to escape and quickly moved to the end of the cart to get down. The driver’s attitude had softened a little. Had he seen her stalwart attempt to remain dignified after a difficult trip, or was it her grace captured in an appealing body which had affected him? Whatever, he offered her a hand saying,

Here, let me help you down.

She took it gratefully as her legs ached too.

    Thank you, driver.

At the last minute, he changed his mind and seized her around the waist and lowered her gently, steadying her until she was balanced once again. She wouldn’t have thought him capable of the gesture, because he had to be in his sixties and wasn’t very tall,
