    Problems in Desert Warfare provides an overview of the problems encountered in desert warfare and some of their solutions. Desert operations have much in common with operations in the other parts of the world. The unique aspects of desert operations stem primarily from deserts' heat and lack of moisture. While these two factors have significant consequences, most of the doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures used in operations in other parts of the world apply to desert operations. The challenge of desert operations is to adapt to a new environment. The purpose in studying desert warfare was to identify the basic, continuing problems the desert poses for military operations and make the results readily available to other military readers. The study was .prepared from unclassified material to permit greater distribution and encourage its use at the unit level. In researching the study, the writer found that most classified information on desert problems was classified due to the information source, not because of the actual problem itself, and that virtually all identified desert problems could be found in unclassified material. The problems discussed in the study should provide a basic level of knowledge for anyone who will be involved in desert operations and should present a point of departure for further study of particular, specific problem areas.

    Middle East Construction provides information on engineer-related support essential to military operations conducted in the Middle East. This manual contains detailed engineer-related information useful at the tactical and operational levels of war. It is provided as a regional reference publication to assist in the planning and conduct of MAGTF operations in arid environments.

    While the unique aspects of the desert environment have profound impact on MAGTF operations, most of the doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures employed in operations in other parts of the world apply to operations in the desert. The unique aspects to operations in the desert stem primarily from the effects of heat and the scarcity of moisture, terrain features, and vegetation. The challenge to MAGTF operations in a desert environment is adapting to the arid climate and conditions.
