Looking Thru the Mind's Eye - Mychal Umi Cox

She whispered Love
Love, love, love …
She whispered love with an angelic voice
so soft, so pure, so full of life
that I thought perhaps I was dreaming,
caught up in a fantasy,
taken away from reality.
Man, this just can’t be real,
but it felt so good to hear.
Could I still be dreaming after all?
Because if so, I don’t want to be awakened,
not when she’s whispering,
Love, love, love.
"Love," she said.
She whispered love.
Love, love, love – she whispered love.
Love, are you awake?
How can you sleep so soundly when I’m
trying to communicate?
How can you lay there so still,
so silent, so beautiful,
without knowing what I’m feeling within?
What’s come over me, she thought.
Must be something in the air tonight,
or a full moon
or something, I guess,
‘cause I’m whispering love in the middle of
the night without regrets.
I didn’t plan to fall this way,
didn’t want to take that kind of plunge into
the unknown.
But here I lay, down for the count,
and I’m not thinking about getting up,
not without you knowing
Love whispered love into your ear tonight.
Love, love, love …
She whispered love, she whispered love.
I know that you’re awake;
I see that smile sneaking through
on your face,
and your breathing and heart rate seem so
out of place, so controlled.
But some things have a force all their own.
So tell me if you heard what I’m going
through!
Tell me if you heard my heart’s cry for you.
Love, love, love …
I whispered love, I whispered love.
I sat up and said, "I know what you’re going
through."
I gently grabbed her hand and said,
"Long have I felt as you do,
so happy, so complete.
So free … but so afraid to tell,"
‘cause long have I whispered love into your
ear as well.
Love, love, love …
I whispered love, I whispered love.
I said, "I love you, Love,
I love you as well."
I have for a long time now.
Just thought you couldn’t tell
and, like you, I didn’t want to fall
so deeply into the unknown;
questioned the meaning of life,
and the full moon as well.
But what I heard was so soft,
so pure, so everlasting
that it changed my whole point of view.
You see, it was my own heart’s cry,
crying out for you,
begging and pleading with me
to tell you the truth,
to restore some balance
back into the universe.
So now that you know
and there are no secrets left untold,
I’ll whisper love, I love you
into your ear no more.
Instead I’ll just say
Love, I love you
Love, I love you so …
I Do
Shhhhhhhh …
So I’m listening now, intensely.
Every word penetrates deeper into my
subconscious.
I watch as every syllable flows off his tongue
and pierces further into my membrane
like red hot pokers and irons.
They trigger a thought pattern,
a burning vision of you.
I nod unknowingly;
perspiration falls from my face.
I wet my lips and clear my throat
that burns like the Sahara.
It’s hot, baby!
Over 400 years have led up to this moment
where you knew me before I was named.
This moment, where time stood still;
and just for an instant, the universe blinked
and the stars gave way to you,
my soulmate.
Out of darkness sweat falls into my eyes,
and again I’m burned by visions of you.
Scenes change, but you’re constant.
Every step I take, you take.
Every breath I breathe, you breathe,
as if we were one, joined from the side
… in time.
A lifetime of preparation could never have
prepared me for this,
this Ossie Davis-Ruby Dee groove of life,
of love.
I remember the first time I said hello.
You smiled a welcoming smile,
and right there, at that instant,
you were mine.
But then again, you always were.
You see, I knew you before you were named.
You are the pyramids.
Surely I danced with you on the Nile,
traveled with you in the belly of the beast,
picked alongside of you
in the deepest of the cane.
Gathered our 40 acres and marched into
Selma,
Montgomery,
Memphis,
and Washington, DC,
and cried many a tear for brothers like
Marcus, Medgar, Malcolm and Martin.
Sat in the pew and wondered how long,
why and when, Lord …
I knew you before you were named.
Maybe we jumped the broom
under a moonlit sky,
or held hands and sang at The Savoy.
Either way, we did it together.
When I look at you, I see eyes that are
shaped like olives,
and skin so black it’s not a color,
but rather a gift from above.
Do you hear what I’m saying?
When I think of your breasts,
I’m reminded of Proverbs 5:19,
"Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant
roe; Let her breast satisfy thee at all times;
and be thou ravished always with her love."
I dig that!
If I could add to it, I would say,
"Let your breast be like the scales of Libra,
neither to judge, or be judged;
but to understand, show compassion
and give life."
Like the milk that flows within,
each drop was the food of my father,
the food of my mother, nurtured in soul.
Each drop was and is life.
You standing here next to me
is also life.
The beginning (I DO).
The completed circle (I DO).
The time traveled by two warriors
lost in endless life and endless love (I DO).
I will love you for infinity times seven (I DO).
Where you go, there I’ll also be (I DO)
I DO … I DO … I DO … I DO.
Always.
And with that came a gentle nudge …
And like a light soaring through a tunnel,
ears popping,
blurred vision coming into full
