    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to the committed youth workers who helped me see Jesus through their teaching and lifestyles: Bill Bower, Jim and Cathy Burns, Marty Driggs, Mike Driggs, Randy Largent, Rick Larsh, Gary Lenhart, Gail McKay, Sydney Perry, Craig Sanders, Pam Sears, Brent and Dawn Watson, Doug Webster, and Gary Webster.

    SPECIAL THANKS

Many of the ideas in this book come from collaboration with good friends, gifted brains, and quality youth workers: Cathy Fields, Eddie James, Keith Page, Scott Rachels, Chris Schmaltz, and David Walker. Appreciation is also extended to my youth ministry students at Southern California College for trying these ideas with their youth groups and providing me with valuable feedback. Also, this book wouldn’t have been published if it weren’t for Noel Becchetti having this idea, the editing skills, and the patience. Finally, thanks goes to Linda Kaye for her partnership in ministry and her invaluable assistance with everything involved in Making Young Lives Count.

    INTRODUCTION

    a2

This book is designed to provide you with a tool that will help you teach about Jesus in a refreshing way. If you’re already a creative teacher, these ideas can act as a springboard for greater creativity. If you appreciate a little creative help, these ideas are ready to go—all you have to do is implement them.

While the methods of instruction vary, the messages are consistent. They’re designed to lead your students to understand more about Jesus and move them toward a stronger commitment to their faith. Students will learn that Jesus was more than just a good man. They’ll learn about him in ways they’ve probably never before experienced. And the more they know about Jesus, the more they’ll know about God.

Look over the first three chapters before you jump into the studies. If you’re a veteran, they’ll be reminders; if you’re new to youth ministry, they’ll give you a foundation to be a more effective teacher.

I hope this book will be a helpful tool for you. More importantly, I hope this book helps your students see Jesus in a new way, and I also hope their lives will be different through God’s grace and your commitment to teach them about the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Blessings from a fellow youth worker.

    CHAPTER 1

WHY USE CREATIVITY IN YOUR TEACHING?

    a2

I can’t recall any students—in all my years of youth ministry—who have come running to youth group screaming, Give me another Bible talk, I can’t get enough of them! Most students manage to sit still through the youth talks week after week (key word: most) only because they know there’s a lot more to youth group than just the talk.

When the talk is packaged creatively, however, students are usually much more interested in learning God’s truth (key word: usually). Using a creative approach isn’t the cure-all to energizing the apathetic or uninterested student, but it does help. Not only does creative teaching capture your students’ attention, but it also communicates to them that you’re willing to do whatever it takes to get the message across. They see you adapting your teaching style in order to enlighten them with God’s timeless truths.

There are three reasons I get excited about creative teaching:

CREATIVE TEACHING MAKES SUNDAY SCHOOL AND YOUTH GROUP EXCITING.

The word boring has been defined as doing the same thing over and over again. And it has been said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again
