    DEE BRESTIN

[Jesus] went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner. . . .Then [Jesus] turned to the woman and said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much.

    LUKE 7:36–50

    THE JOY OF GOD’S LOVE

the nameless woman from Nain heard that Jesus, the Jewish rabbi, was to dine at Simon the Pharisees home that evening. A notoriously sinful woman, she was sought by Nain’s men in the darkest hours of their lustiest nights. To satisfy their illicit sexual cravings, they used her and abused her. . . .

The nameless woman from Nain, however, had come to a turning point in her life. She gazed into the mirror of her soul and could not bear her own reflection. She realized her sinfulness. She craved the forgiveness and peace offered by the popular teacher from Nazareth.

She arrives at Simon’s house while Jesus is eating there. . . . She darts to Him and collapses at His feet and cries. Her actions sketch the scene of her sinful nature. Her hair cleanses Christ’s feet as she yearns for Him to cleanse her heart. . . . Her alabaster bottle of perfume, poured on His toes, pays tribute to the power of His future resurrection and to His divine kingship. . . .

Jesus states, Her many sins have been forgiven— for she loved much.

    GOD’S TENDER CARE

Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin?

And not one of them falls to the

ground apart from your Father’s will.

    MATTHEW 10 : 29

[Cast] all your care upon Him,

    for He cares for you.

    1 PETER 5 : 7

Bless the LORD, O my soul,

and forget not all His benefits:

    Who forgives all your iniquities,

    Who heals all your diseases,

Who redeems your life from destruction,

    Who crowns you with lovingkindness

    and tender mercies.

    PSALM 107 : 2–4

    GOD’S TENDER CARE

english sparrows. They’re worth barely a penny, Jesus said so. Yet of the world’s nine thousand bird species, Jesus singled out the least-noticed and most insignificant of birds to make a point.

If God takes time to keep tabs on every sparrow—who it is, where it’s going, whether or not its needs are being met—then surely He keeps special tabs on you. Intimately. Personally. And with every detail in mind.

The Bible may point to eagles to underscore courage and power, and it may talk about doves as symbols of peace and contentment. But God’s Word reserves sparrows to teach a lesson about trust. Just as God tenderly cares for a tiny bird, even making note of when it is harmed, or when it falls
