Your hands are sweaty.
Your face is hot.
Your knees are shaking.
And you're not sure you can even stand... never mind walk to the front of the room.
GULP! You—yes, you!— have to make a speech!
Everyone is expecting you to say something wonderful ... and you're not even sure you can say anything at all. It's not that you don't want to do well. It's just that you can't seem to find the words.
Ever feel that way? Okay, maybe nothing quite so . . . dramatic. But most all of us hit times when putting our thoughts into words brings on the butterflies.
Maybe it's a class report . . . or leading your youth group devotional . . . or accepting an award (I didn't say you were untalented, just uncomfortable) that makes you clutch Up
inside.
Or maybe . . . just maybe . . . it's the thought of talking to God that brings out your shy
side?
Do you have trouble getting started? Run out of things to say? Feel that there's something missing in your prayers? Wish you could feel closerto God?
Now, what if... someone could . . .
Show you how to pray the way God wants you to pray . . .
Bring prayer alive for you . . .
Give you a passion for praying?!
Wouldn't you jump at the chance? Well, so did the disciples!
Boy, did they jump . . .
DAY 1
Lord, Teach Us Now to Pray
One day Jesus was praying in a certain
place. When he finished, one of his disciples
said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as
John taught his disciples."
–LUKE 11:1 (NIV)
Lord, teach us to pray. It doesn't sound like an unusual request. But in the Greek language of Luke 11:1, the tone is a bit more urgent—as if that eager disciple blurts out,
Lord, teach us now to pray." Why the big rush? What made it so important that Jesus teach them to pray right now?!
Surely the disciples already knew all kinds of prayers. The Bible is full of them. Prayers of praise. Prayers of asking.
Even prayers that simply say thank you
(though those tend to get a little dusty from lack of use). But nothing that brought the look of peace Jesus wore when he returned from prayer.
The disciples might not have known exactly what it was, but they knew they wanted it.
And they wanted it now!
THERE'S NOTHING LIKE AN EAGERAUDIENCE
I don't know about you, but I can practically see a big grin spreading across Jesus' face when he heard that question. What teacher doesn't live for the moment when a student asks to learn?
Jesus knew if the disciples were to learn how to really talk to God, they needed more than just another example of prayer; they needed to understand the principles of prayer.
So Jesus gave them not just a prayer, but the pattern for all prayer. And the disciples learned it well. Within just a few short years, they had turned their world upside down!
The Prayer of Jesus made a difference in the disciples' lives, and it can do the same for y o u . . . so keep reading... make the journey... learn the secret.
CAUSE FOR EXCITEMENT
Now, maybe it's never occurred to you that there is a secret
—something more to prayer than you know about. Something so special that it can change your life . . . and your relationship with God!
But even if you've never thought about it at all, I am pretty sure you do know exactly how those disciples felt. After all, they were students—just like you—with an opportunity to learn something wonderful. . . from a master teacher. Wouldn't that make you pretty eager,
