Dream as big as you can dream, and anything is possible….I am sort of in a dream world. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure it is real.

    –Michael Phelps

    Introduction

Ever hear the saying about swimmers with big hands and feet? They’re sunk unless they’ve got the ability and heart to match. This is not a problem for Michael Phelps, the greatest all-around competitor in the history of his sport. Every time he splashes into the water, he’s determined to produce a once-in-a-lifetime performance—according him rock-star status among swim fans and drawing a tidal wave of attention from the non-chlorinated world, as well.

Michael Fred Phelps was born on June 30, 1985. He is an American swimmer who came into global recognition primarily after and during the 2004 Olympic games. He has won 22 Olympic Medals—six gold and two bronze at Athens in 2004, eight gold at Beijing China in 2008, and four gold and two silver in London in 2012. This led to his becoming the most successful athlete at both of these Olympic Games editions.

Phelps has twice equaled the record eight medals of any type at a single Olympics, first achieved by Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin at the 1980 Moscow Summer Games. Phelps' five gold medals in individual events tied the single games record set by compatriot Eric Heiden in the 1980 Winter Olympics and equaled by Vitaly Scherbo at the 1992 Summer Games.

Phelps holds the record for the most gold medals won in a single Olympics; his eight at the 2008 Beijing games surpassed American swimmer Mark Spitz's seven-gold performance at the Munich games in 1972. Phelps is the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time with a total of 22 medals. He also holds the all-time record for most gold Olympic medals, at 18.

Michael Phelps' international titles and record breaking performances have earned him the World Swimmer of the Year Award six times and American Swimmer of the Year eight times. He has won a total of 66 medals in major international competition: 54 gold, nine silver, and three bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships. His unprecedented Olympic success in 2008 earned Phelps Sports Illustrated magazine's Sportsman of the Year award.

After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthier lifestyles. As a participant in the U.S. Anti-doping agency's Project Believe program, Phelps is regularly tested to ensure that his system is clean of performance-enhancing drugs.

Coach Bob Bowman describes Phelps as a solitary man with a rigid focus at the pool prior to a race, but afterward a man incredibly invested in the success of the people he cares about. Bowman recounts that Phelps is unbelievably kind-hearted, recounting Phelps's interaction with young children after practices.

    Physical Build and Athleticism

A few physical attributes particularly suit Phelps to swimming. Among them are his long, thin torso, which offers him low drag in the water. Also to his advantage in the pool are his arms, which span 6 feet 7 inches (201 cm). This is highly disproportionate to his height of 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm). His arms act as long, propulsive paddles. His relatively short legs lower drag, and perhaps add the speed enhancement of a hydrofoil; his size-14 feet provide the effect of flippers; and his hyper-mobile ankles can extend beyond the pointe of a ballet dancer, enabling him to whip his feet as if they were fins for maximum thrust through the water.

Phelps has size 14 feet, but in addition to large feet, he also has double-jointed ankles.

His physique notwithstanding, endurance may be Michael’s single greatest asset. He’s able to hold his stroke under pressure and when fatigue begins to creep in. From a mind over matter standpoint, Michael is also off the charts. His ability to relax, focus and block out the pain all at once is unique in his sport. He never seems nervous before a race, yet his intensity on the starting block is unmatched.

All of this leads to the same conclusions, which have been drawn by many: Michael Phelps has the perfect build and athleticism for a swimmer.
