How to Fly with a Baby - Brianna Meighan
Augustine
HOW SOON CAN WE FLY?
One of William’s first trips (10 weeks old). CLT - AVL
The answer depends on you, your baby, and your Pediatrician. Personally, I would not recommend flying until after your baby is at least 6 weeks old, but that’s just me. We traveled as a family for the first time at 10 weeks, flying from Panama to Orlando, Florida for a family reunion. From Orlando, we flew to my hometown of Asheville, North Carolina for William’s baptism. The trip was a massive success for us all. We had to conquer planes, changing diapers at 30,000 feet, rental cars, new car seats, hotel rooms, sleeping in a queen bed with baby, nursing on the go, napping in a stroller—the works! Despite the challenges, that first trip gave me, as a new mother, so much confidence! That trip taught me that William and I could do anything and go anywhere together—we weren’t just confined to the convenience and safety of our house.
So how do you know if you are ready to travel with your baby? Again, all you can do is feel out the waters with little day-trips around your hometown first. When you start feeling brave, try going to the mall (pick a Monday or Tuesday morning when it is quiet). And just give it a go. Then try going to a restaurant for dinner with your baby. Pick somewhere that is family-friendly and be prepared to have to step away from the table to find a quiet and appropriate spot to rock your little one to sleep. Don’t forget to pack extra everything in your bag (extra change of clothes, diapers, wipes, toys, blankets, pacifiers, formula, etc.) Once you feel confident tootling around town and toting your baby to restaurants, then you are ready to start exploring the rest of the world together. The first trip sounds daunting, but trust me, it’s actually so liberating, and it will have you craving more trips with your baby before you know it.
Be advised that if you must travel with a newborn baby, or a baby less than 3 weeks old, some airlines will require a Physician Travel Approval Letter from your pediatrician before you
