A longtime resident of Montana, he graduated from Dartmouth College and received a master’s in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, then headed off to remote spots of the world to write magazine articles and books. Many of his stories are historical accounts of early American explorers in wilderness settings and their contact with Indigenous peoples. His book Astoria, about Thomas Jefferson’s attempt to establish a colony on the West Coast, was a New York Times bestseller and a finalist for a PEN USA literary award. Young Washington, about George Washington’s early days in the military, was a finalist for the George Washington Book Prize. Stark’s next book, about the Shawnee chief Tecumseh and his struggle with William Henry Harrison for America’s heartlands, will be published by Random House in 2023. Stark is a longtime contributor to Outside, and his writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, and many other publications.visualizza meno
