Born on September 30, 1890 at “Sunnybank” in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, the son of Frederic F. and Virginia Belle “Terhune” Van De Water, He attended New York University and Columbia University he received an honorary L.H.D. from Middlebury College in 1952. He became a reporter on the New York American in 1914 and after many advancements became night editor of the New York Tribune from 1915-1922. He was then the Tribune’s book critic for two years and served on the staff of the Ladies Home Journal from 1922-1928. Later he was a book critic for the New York Evening Post.
Van de Water was a former authority on the New York State Police and at one time held the rank of honorary sergeant as its only civilian member. In 1924, he travelled in the West Indies, where he investigated and reported of rum pirates and Chinese smugglers for Harper’s magazine. He also wrote short stories for pulp fiction magazines such as Collier’s. In the 1949 historical novel The Green Cockade (also published as Catch a Falling Star), Van de Water described the complicated history of Vermont during the American War of Independence, with Ethan Allen waging in effect a double war of independence, both sharing in the common struggle against the British but also struggling to keep Vermont independent against the annexation efforts of New York State.
A prolific writer, Van de Water was the author of numerous books, including Plunder (1933), Still Waters (1932), Hidden Ways (1937), The Real McCoy (1931) Rudyard Kipling’s Vermont Feud (1937), Horsemen of the Law (1926), The Green Cockade/Catch a Falling Star (1949), and Wings of the Morning (1955).
He died in Brattleboro, Vermont, on September 16, 1968, aged 77.view less
