He enlisted in the 18th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment in 1923. He was commissioned a lieutenant in 1926, and within three years became regimental Adjutant. He transferred to the German Air Force in 1931, where he received his initial training as a pilot and observer. In 1932 he was appointed Adjutant of Group “N” at the German Aviation School and became captain in 1934. He became Adjutant of the famous Fighter Wing “Boelcke” and was assigned to the German Air Force Academy at Berlin-Gatow in 1935.
When WWII erupted, he was serving as Operations Officer to the Chief of German Air Defense. Promoted to major in 1940, he was given command of the 2nd Squadron of the Third Fighter Group, then operating against Britain. He was transferred to the Russian theater of operations in 1944 and posted at Command Headquarters of the Second Air Fleet. He also served as a Staff Officer with the Commander-in-Chief South for the African campaign.
In 1942 he returned to the Eastern Front and became Chief of Staff of the VIII Air Corps, operating particularly in the Crimean area. He became Chief of Staff of Air Force Headquarters Don in 1943, serving during a critical period when the Luftwaffe was defending the withdrawing German Army. He was promoted to General in 1944, became Chief of Staff of the First Air Fleet in the northern theater of operations, and was then assigned to the Command Headquarters of the Air Force High Command (OKL).
He died in 1968, aged 67.view less
