Screenplays, short stories, and poems were my focus yet my talent was sorely lacking. Hey, I was 10. What do you expect?
When my parents realized that I was serious about this writing thing, they invested in an electric typewriter. My fingers thanked them.
However, this serious endeavor took a sidetrack when I discovered the band Def Leppard and the song “Photograph” to be exact. I had to have a guitar. Then I had to be in a band. Then I had to go on the road. I pursued a career in the music business with the band Machine Gun Kelly. Although we never hit the big time, we had an incredible time. We opened shows for national recording artists Trixter and Slaughter, recorded two CDs, and played a ton of shows around Iowa and Minnesota. After 6 years of strumming through a heavy playing schedule, we broke up in 1997. I am still close with the other members of the band and consider them my brothers.
I rediscovered writing while the band was still together when I wrote up some promotional releases for the band. They were mostly true facts on each band member filtered through a fictional gangster story. The drummer made the comment “Wow, you’re pretty good at this writing thing.”
That single comment planted the seed although it wasn’t until 2008 when I fully rediscovered my love of the written word. Since 2008, I have delved into writing screenplays and learning and mastering the craft.
One of my screenplays entitled “Run” ended up as a quarter finalist in the 2015 Page International Screenwriting Awards contest.
I continue to write every day to release these stories and characters from my head. Mainly, because they won’t shut up until I do and it gets awfully loud in there.
I have several screenplays that I am currently working on as well as outlining a new novel which will hopefully turn into a series of novels.view less
