Helena's interest in separation and divorce is both personal and communal. She started researching this topic because she was confused about her own relationship. Not knowing what to do, she wanted to learn from the experience of others.
In this book Helena explores the issues behind 'perfectly good' middle-class marriages, and the difficulty of leaving these 'for no good reason'. Her interest lies in the code of silence women keep, to protect their marriages, despite many suffering neglect, loneliness and emotional abuse. She is also interested in the difficult process women follow when considering and finally making the decision to end their relationship, and how they think and feel retrospectively.
Her broader interest lies in how women unintentionally collaborate with, and protect the norms that undermine their autonomy and self-determination. She believes that silence is a weapon women use against their own interests. 'Separation and Divorce - Would you do it Again?' breaks the silence of 14 women who generously share their experiences, wisdom and insights to help others.
Helena eventually separated, leaving her 'perfectly respectable marriage for no good reason' except a deep need to be happier, and truer to herself. She believes that she did so with more clarity and understanding, because of what she learned from the women in this book.view less
