My name is Anita Swanson, and I love to write and create adventures that explore interconnections and inter-dependencies between people and their natural communities. My hope in doing so is that you will be inspired to find out more about your natural legacy and act to preserve it for yourself, your community, your children, and grandchildren who may follow.
My parents played a big role in forming my love for natural treasures, as me and my two siblings spent countless hours running barefoot and biking around the neighborhood on the island of Oahu. One of my most lucid memories as a young child was created in our backyard, and helped ignite my interest and passion for wild creatures great and small:
When I was five years old, I crouched behind an avocado tree and waited, with held breath and string in hand, for a bird to take the bait of a burnt pancake I'd placed at the bottom of a mesh guinea pig cage. Imagine my astonishment and delight when, a few minutes later, a dashing male cardinal fluttered down and settled gently upon the flat piece of bait. Not letting the voracious creature take more than a bite or two, I pulled the stick: craack! The cage door fell shut, trapping the beautiful bird inside. After a few moments of watching the frantic bird flutter about the cage, I lifted the trap's mesh lid. Immediately, the bird launched into the air and disappeared, chattering, into the lush greenery that was our Hawaiian backyard.
Since then, my career in conservation has had many turns and twists. In 1991, I earned a B.S. in wildlife management from the University of Maine; in 1993, I received an M.S. in environmental forestry biology at SUNY-ESF, Syracuse. I've worked coast to coast as a wildlife technician, biologist, and/or conservationist for various non-profits, state and federal agencies, and had an adventurous (but brief) stint in Peace Corps-Argentina.
My family currently resides in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where many locals like to say we don't have ‘real’ winter. ????! (after six years of being here, I'm still trying to figure that one out: Custer usually averages twenty-one days below zero each winter). Currently, I'm full-time engaged as a mom, wife, volunteer, and writer, and like to encourage people to get outside where you can receive the ultimate 'wireless connection'...view less
