About this audiobook

An Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Three sisters’ secrets collide in a shocking novel of suspense by the bestselling author of the Mercy Kilpatrick series.

Twenty years ago Emily Mills’s father was murdered, and she found his body hanging in the backyard. Her younger sister, Madison, claims she was asleep in her room. Her older sister, Tara, claims she was out with friends. The tragedy drove their mother to suicide and Tara to leave town forever. The killer was caught. The case closed.

Ever since, Emily and Madison have tried to forget what happened that night—until an eerily similar murder brings it all back. It also brings FBI special agent Zander Wells to the Oregon logging town. As eager as he is to solve the brutal double slaying, he is just as intrigued with the mystery of Emily’s and her sisters’ past.

When more blood is shed, Zander suspects there’s a secret buried in this town no one wants unearthed. Is it something Emily and Madison don’t know? Or aren’t telling? And Tara? Maybe Emily can’t bear to find her. Because when Tara disappeared, she took a secret of her own with her.

This is the first book in the Columbia River series, first off Zander Wells, he was the reason I chose this book to read, as my son’s name is Zander and it is an unusual spelling.
At the very beginning, I was reeled in and I could not put the book down.
A murder case from twenty years ago where someone was charged was done and dusted, until now when it happens again, the same kind of MO, does lightning strike twice?
Apart from the murders and the investigation, there was more to the book, there was romance and a lot of other stuff including diversity in a small town.
Now this book left me guessing and kept me wanting to read more. It was written well and I liked both Zander and Ava’s characters.
I am looking forward to reading the second book in the series.

When Emily Mills goes to an employee's home to see why she is late for work, she isn't expecting to find her employee murdered and her black husband also murdered and hanging from a tree in their backyard. This brings backs horrible memories for Emily whose own father was hanged twenty years earlier. When the local sheriff looks like he's going to call it a murder-suicide, Emily decides to call in the FBI.Zander Wells and his partner Ava McLane come to begin their investigation since it could be a hate crime. Zander and Ava find themselves investigating in a town filled with secrets. Emily has secrets of her own because she has never told anyone what happened when her father died and her older sister disappeared. Emily has her hands full running the diner that supports her family including the three great-aunts who took Emily and her sister Madison in when her father died and her mother committed suicide. She is also dealing with an ex-husband who just can't seem to accept that their relationship is over. It certainly isn't time to fall for one of the FBI agents who have come to work on the case.Zander isn't looking for a new relationship either. He is still grieving the loss of his wife and unborn daughter. Falling for a witness, or possibly a suspect, isn't anywhere in the FBI manual.I enjoyed this story which talks about Oregon's racists past which might not be as far in the past as most people would like.

This one started out strong, but I lost interest. At one point, I didn't really care who the murderer was. Granted, my mood could have played a part in this... The narration was wonderful!

This is my first Kendra Elliot book and it definitely wont be my last!!

Although this is the first book in the new Columbia River series, I figured that some of the characters might be spin offs from other series, but that didn't affect my reading in any way.

The killer was caught and the case was closed but it destroyed the family of Mills sisters forever.

But now twenty years later, when Emily finds her friend Lindsay and her husband Sean murdered in a similar fashion, it brings back memories that she never wants to remember.

FBI Agents Zander Wells and his partner, Ava McClane are called to investigate this double homicide. But then the question arises-Is it a murder-suicide as determined by the local sheriff? A racially motivated crime? Or is it connected to a Emily Mills father's murder?

It was a great suspense thriller that had me hooked on right till the end. I liked how this book was about past meets present type, wherein deeply buried family secrets are finally revealed and solved.

All the characters were amazing and it made an enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to read the next book in the series!

Emily Mills' father was murdered and she found his body. Then her oldest sister ran away from home and her mother died by suicide. This left her alone with her little sister and her three great aunts who raised them. Flash forward to Emily finding a co-worker and her husband dead with the husband hung like her father. There are more bodies discovered as Emily works with the handsome FBI agent to tie all the loose ends together. Along the way the town's secrets as well as family secrets are discovered. While there are some interesting story lines, it was an average read.

Her older sister, Tara, claims she was out with friends. The tragedy drove their mother to suicide and Tara to leave town forever. The killer was caught and life moved on.

Now she has stopped by her employee Lindsay’s house to see why she didn’t shown up for work. She discovers Lindsay has been stabbed multiple times. After following a blood trail from the bedroom to the yard, Emily finds Lindsay’s husband, Sean, hanging from a tree. It's very similar to her father’s death.

I loved Elliot's last series featuring Mercy Kilpatrick. This new novel spins off characters from one of her older series, Callahan & McLane, with Ava McLane as one of the FBI agents in the story, along with her partner, Zander Wells, who is the main FBI character.

This looks like an entertaining mystery with a promising start, well-developed characters, and an action-packed plot. I'm on board for the next book in the series The Silence expected later this year.

This is the first book in a new series by suspense fiction author Kendra Elliot. She is a new author for me but after reading this book and reviews of some of her earlier books, I definitely need to read more books by her.The book is a well written page turner. Every time I thought that I knew who the 'bad guy' was, I would find out several pages later that I was totally wrong. As an added bonus to the suspense story, there are the beginnings of a new romance that hopefully will become stronger in the future books in this series.Emily, Madison and Tara lived with their parents in Oregon. Twenty years before, their father had been found hanging in the back yard and their house was set on fire. Several weeks after that, their mother committed suicide. Emily and Madison went to live with their three aunts and Tara disappeared the night of the murder. The killer was caught and sent to prison and the case was closed. Except that all three sisters had secrets about what happened that night. Emily and Madison work in the diner that was started by a relative years before and are living a good life with their aunts. Until...there is a murder in town similar to their father's murder. Did someone copycat their father's death and if so WHY? A husband and wife are found dead nearby - the wife was stabbed multiple times and the husband was hanged. The wife worked at the diner with Emily and Madison and the husband was a much loved history teacher at the local high school The two cases were similar enough that the FBI was called in. Zander, the lead agent and his partner Amy have to decide if there is a connection to the earlier crime and after questioning Emily, Zander feels that she is hiding something from him. His interest in her starts to go beyond the crime and we have the very beginning of a new romance. As Zander and Amy investigate the crime, they realize that the sisters and the town hold many secrets and until they find the answers other lives will be in danger. Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

I was sent this book from the publisher/publicity team. My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.I am not normally a huge fan of detective stories, but this one sounded so good. This is more of a mystery than a thriller or romantic suspense. Actually, there is not really romance at all. There are relationships, but very limited romance. As a romance reader, I did not miss the romance in this one though and it worked without it. This story deals with racial issues, hate crimes, the KKK, murders, and more. I think it is important to know this going in as I had no clue that this was the direction the story was going to take. This story follow several murders that currently happened and also one that occurred twenty years prior. I really like that this story is told in present tense. We still get information from the past with limited flashbacks, but it is intertwined with the present day. The information really worked all together. I really liked wanting to know what happened years ago and recently to Shawn and Lindsey. This did drag a little for me around the half way point. Otherwise, it was a pretty good paced story that kept my interest. I wanted to know how everything was going to unfold. This definitely took a different direction than I was expecting. Overall, it was a decent read. I will definitely check out more from the author.
