About this audiobook

Sixteen-year-old Lorena Leland’s dreams of a rich and fulfilling life as a writer are dashed when the stock market crashes in 1929. Seven years into the Great Depression, Rena’s banker father has retreated into the bottle, her sister is married to a lazy charlatan and gambler, and Rena is an unemployed newspaper reporter. Eager for any writing job, Rena accepts a position interviewing former slaves for the Federal Writers’ Project. There, she meets Frankie Washington, a 101-year-old woman whose honest yet tragic past captivates Rena.

As Frankie recounts her life as a slave, Rena is horrified to learn of all the older woman has endured―especially because Rena’s ancestors owned slaves. While Frankie’s story challenges Rena’s preconceptions about slavery, it also connects the two women whose lives are otherwise separated by age, race, and circumstances. But will this bond of respect, admiration, and friendship be broken by a revelation neither woman sees coming?

A wonderful story of things from the past that are not easy to read but written in a way that you want to read. Poof of the power of God’s love and the peace that comes with forgiveness.

The style of writing is exceptional! The story line is sometimes hard as it’s real life tragic events. The readers voice and inflections added greatly to an exceptional audiobook experience.

Under the Tulip Tree by Michelle shocklee . (Scribd autobook)

The Day the Stock market crashes, Lorena feels her life is ruined. Seven years later it seems all her family is in a worse off population, and Rena has lost her job with the newspaper.

However when a job opens up interviewing ex slaves for the government, Lorena (whose family had been slaveowners) gets the job . Although she is nervous and scared, she meets her first interviewee.

Frankie Washington is now 101 years old and through telling her life story to Lorena, she changes her life and brings peace to her own, its a sad story at times but it leads to redemption and peace. Highly recommend.

This was the most heart touching book I have listened to in some time. The narrator did an amazing job. Her southern accent was just what this story needed, reading this novel would not have been the same for me. At times I wanted to weep for both Frankie and Rena. I will probably listen to it again in the future.
