From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Behind Every Lie and The Night Olivia Fell comes an unforgettable and heart-wrenching novel about the lengths one woman will go to save her son.
Emma loves her life. She’s the mother of a precocious kindergartener, married to her soulmate—a loyal and loving police detective—and has a rewarding career as a doctor at the local hospital.
But everything comes crashing down when her son, Josh, is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Determined to save him, Emma makes the risky decision to sell opioids to fund the life-saving treatment he needs. But when somebody ends up dead, a lethal game of cat and mouse ensues, her own husband leading the chase. With her son’s life hanging in the balance, Emma is dragged into the dark world of drugs, lies, and murder. Will the truth catch up to her before she can save Josh?
A timely and moving exploration of a town gripped by the opioid epidemic, and featuring Christina McDonald’s signature “complex, emotionally intense” (Publishers Weekly) prose, Do No Harm examines whether the ends ever justify the means...even for a desperate mother.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5It started off so good..then everything went downhill.
The plot was interesting with predictable "twists". For some reason the book felt claustrophobic because Emma and Nate kept on running around the same circles over and over again like headless chickens.
I think the writing style is not for me as well. It felt really weird that flashbacks, anger, trauma reveals & love confessions are all written on one page...it could have been structured much better than that.
The characters were all flat and robotic (thats the dialogue issue). Emma was unbearable! She's such stuck up idiot, how did she become a doctor?! Nate isn't much better, he just had no personality at all.
There was an issue with the audiobook narration too. There are two narrators for Emma & Nate. Emma's parts were read at a slower speed than Nate, so I had to keep on switching between to speeds until I gave up and just wanted to finish the book as fast as I can.2 people found this helpful
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The male narator speaks way too fast .
The reasoning behind the story is a hit hipocritical1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great great great I cried and cried - what a mother would do for her child
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I have read three of Christina McDonald's books and they all share a common theme of the very extreme measures of what a mother will do for her child. I will say this one was disturbing but interesting and held my attention to see how it would end. I will say that this situation gave me pause for thought, as a mother, of how I would attack this situation if I actually found myself in it. It. The story is probably not realistic of what would actually unfold, but I will say it made a great fictional story and I would recommend it. It also brought to light the very unfortunate opioid addiction which is just horrific and how it impacted people.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5As a mother, you do whatever it takes to protect your children. And that was exactly what Emma did. She did what she could to save her son.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It is nice to read a thriller that isn’t about husbands or wives cheating and/or killing each other. There were times I wanted to scream at and shake both Nate and Emma. They both seemed naive and gullible in their own ways. Emma constantly seemed to throw someone under the bus. But I guess that was part of doing whatever it takes. I didn’t see the twists coming which is also a good change of pace. I wish things could have happened differently but I guess can’t always get a 100% happy ending. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Once i got into plot i couldnt put it down!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I enjoyed the book. Some twists and turns that give you enough excitement you don’t want to put it down. I enjoyed the plot and the ending.
Great book. I’ve decided it is on my favorites list for 2021.
Side note: a little too much cursing for my liking. Could have done without it. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I really enjoyed the opening. Caught my attention and I was hooked. However as the book progressed, I found the protagonist to be less and less believable. I didn't buy into it and so basically, I skipped to the end to get the answer to who 'you' was. Too far fetched.
